This month with Betty & Bee
Wednesday, May 27th, 2015
Hi there and welcome to the first column with Defacto and Betty & Bee. We’ll be keeping you up to date with what’s on in the industry from product launches to industry gossip. This weekends been a big one (literally….it was Radio 1’s Big Weekend), while Saturday night saw us glued to our screens for Eurovision. Also, did we mention it was our favourite famous lovebirds anniversary? We round up our titbits that you need to know right now.
First up, it’s our gurl Taylor Swift…
It’s been a big week for Swifty fans the world over. Tay Tay all but tore it up at Radio1’s Big Weekend sporting an unbelievable sheer and fringed bodysuit. We loved seeing her rock her signature blonde bob and red lips, especially after the drastic change in her recent video Bad Blood. The Sin City inspired video saw her gathering her famous super cool group of power gals including Lena Dunham, Karlie Kloss and Cara Delavinge for an action packed showdown, With over $13,000 of fetish wear borrowed for the shoot (Tay’s blush basque was a favourite) it was seeing her with red locks that really rocked our boat. Personally we think she looked fantastic, but don’t leave the blonde side just yet Swifty!
We can’t not talk about Eurovision…
It’s that time of year again where we take to our living rooms for the annual Eurovision song contest. This year it was held in Austria where our favourite bearded lady, and last years winner, Conchita Wurst, hosted. Let’s face it, no one really watched it for the music right? Some of our favourite looks for the night included Georgia’s goth inspired raven look with smoked out eyes and Serbia’s sequin and glitter overload. We don’t know about you, but we’d follow that wonderful singing woman in to battle. Her bejeweled cape was our most coveted item of the night. The U.K’s entry? I think the less said about that the better but we leave you with this – Gatsby. Skat. Light up suits. Shudders.
Relationship Goals of Kimye
Last but not least, a happy anniversary to our favourite power couple Kimye. We still can’t believe it’s been one year since Kanye took Kim up the aisle, but word is to celebrate their off renewing their vows in Paris. And they have plenty to celebrate. The lovebirds are the current faces of Balmain, Kim launched her first book, Selfish (yes the book of selfies) at the beginning of the month and they were named among Time’s 100 most influential people. Paris sounds like a pretty nice way to round off that year right?
Product of the week: Arran Aromatics
We’re loving Arran Aromatics Feel Good Formulas Sea Mud Mask. With hints of bergamot and mint it’s our go to mask of the moment when we’re having a skin care crisis. Perfect for disguising all those late nights!
Next month we’ll be talking about our favourite in salon brands. Got your favourite? Tweet us at @DefactoSalons #bettyandbee.

Growing Grey Gracefully?
Thursday, May 14th, 2015
Beauty trends have a weird way of coming around don’t they? A few short years ago boxed hair dyes were heralding their ability to cover those greys – but now grey hair has undergone a dramatic shift, with people flocking to salons to replicate the now coveted wintery locks.
Once associated with the blue rinse brigade, grey hair has been co-opted by the hottest a-listers and fashionistas looking for an edgy take on the former pastel trend. Kylie Jenner, Rihanna and Perrie Edwards have all been spotted embracing the trend. From a relatively niche beauty statement, grey hair has morphed into an instagram sensation.
While not the easiest to pull off, or indeed maintain, it’s become (literally) one of the coolest hues available in salons. With the right maintenance and a killer hairdresser (find one on Defacto) you should be able to match the perfect shade of grey to your wardrobe, skin tone and lifestyle. The trend can vary from near white pure frosts to smokier greys with tones of purples, blues and black. Either way, your colourist should be able to help guide you to what will best suit your skin tone, what shade you can achieve and the best ways to manage it. It’s a style not for the faint of heart, but one sure to make an impact.
Here’s our top salon picks for taking you to the dark(ish) side.
This Glasgow unisex barber and hair salon are expert stylists. Shortlisted for this year’s Herald Look Awards Best Barber, they are also a dab hand when it comes to colour. With impeccable service and a relaxed atmosphere, this is the place you want to go to find a stylist who shares the same vision of amazing hair that you do.
With over 20 years of haircare behind them and over 62 salons across the UK, your hair will be made gorgeous in their safe and experienced hands. An impressive creative team and over 50 industry awards to their name make Rush the perfect choice if you’re looking for premium quality service.
An indie boutique set in the heart of Worchester city, this gem prides itself in it’s bespoke and personal service. Known for their spectacular finishes, attention to detail and luxurious surroundings, Avant Garde are a more niche but certainly no less quality choice.
The real trick to this is in maintenance and care. Odds are that at some point you will be making acquaintance with the old bleach bottle so weekly conditioning treatments will soon become part of your haircare regime. Couple that with the finest purple shampoos on the market to keep those brassy tones at bay and you’ll be guaranteed to look fantastic in this season’s most in demand beauty trends.
Kylie Jenner – The truth behind those lips!
Thursday, May 14th, 2015
The long winded international nightmare is over people, we finally know the truth about Kylie Jenner and her perfectly plump pout. At this point, it may seem like everyone has exhausted the topic of the Kardashian stepsisters lips and trust us, the sentiment is mutual — but, with her only coming clean this past week about her use of temporary lip fillers, we wonder, how ever will the internet survive without the drama?
For weeks people worldwide have been testing the #KylieJennerChallenge in a bid to recreate her full figured kisser. To join in the challenge, people would take a small round device (cup, shot glass, whatever!), wrap their lips under the rim and suck, trapping the blood vessels and making the lips look fuller. Although, fuller is the understatement of the century when putting the challenge into practise. Not only is the physical act of suctioning your lips like this grotesque, it’s also risky. One challenger posted a photo after they suctioned too much and broke the glass on their face!
Aside from the possibility of permanent physical and emotional damage, the challenge is also really mean. Really, it’s just making fun of the baby Jenner and her love of big lips.
In last week’s episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians, Kylie came clean about the ‘real truth behind the lips’. Most shocking part of her reasoning? Because she wanted to, STOP PRESS!
“I have temporary lip fillers, it’s just an insecurity of mine and it’s what I wanted to do, I wanted to admit sooner, but people are so quick to judge me on everything, so I might have tiptoed around the truth — but I didn’t lie.”
But really though, on a scale of 1 to 10, how much do you care whether Kylie Jenner’s had her lips done? (One being really not caring and 10 being you lie awake at night wondering about various aspects of her lips) To be completely honest, we’re a pretty solid “1” when it comes to this situation. The amount of man hours that has gone into all the press surrounding the subject, including writing this blog post, TV coverage and general column inches show just how much the world cares about Kylie Jenners lips, and it turns out it’s a lot.
The bottom line (beyond “Who cares?”) is that we need to either a) stop expecting everyone to look a certain way or b) stop punishing them for signs of effort. Yes, it’s wishful thinking — but hey, sounds nice, doesn’t it? Which we now know Kylie did — albeit, several months later. But maybe now everything is all out in the open, we can finally move on to a different topic of discussion. Please?
