Sleek Matte Me Lip Creams Review
Thursday, June 30th, 2016
Hi its Natalie, I’m back again and I’ve got more to say about make up. This time around liquid to matte lip colours. Specifically the Sleek Matte Me range.
This range has been out for a while and their full name is the ‘Sleek Matte Me Ultra Smooth Lip Creams’, by my estimations they were released early this year in the UK. However, still a lot of people don’t seem to know about this incredibly affordable lip range.
Coming in at £4.99 a product, I couldn’t resist getting some to try. There are 12 shades in the range; pinks, nudes, purples and reds. All are gorgeous colours and I decided to pick out 8 of my favourites. Or more honestly, the only 8 I could ever seem to find in my local (and not as local) Boots stores.
The sleek range hasn’t been in Scottish Boots stores all that long and I’ve splurged on a few products from there since, the make up is pretty good and really affordable and the lip creams weren’t a change to that.
The formula for all the shades obviously doesn’t change all that much between products and it is, in fact, ultra smooth and almost feels velvet-y on the lips. I’m not the best at applying liquid or cream products (apart from liquid liner) but I was raring to give it a go. So here are the colours I tried.
I really liked this colour, I’m a big fan of nudes because I feel like its easy to use them to accentuate your lips and make them look bigger. It would be a good dupe for Kylie Jenner’s KoKo K lip kit, very much a ‘my lips but better’ shade. It was easy to apply and took one coat to get it even.
This was a nice coral-ly pink, not one of my usual shades but I liked it in the tube. It’s a shade that would suit the majority of skin tones and again it’s easy to apply. This is the only summery shade of this range I bought, autumnal is more my style.
This is a very bright purple, it definitely accentuates my skins natural pallor and I think of it as more of a fun, festival shade myself. Maybe that’s because it’s a little out of my comfort zone… it’s a little harder to apply than the nudes and in result it ends up a bit uneven. Id still recommend it if you’re looking for a stand out shade.
I was so excited about this shade, any chance I get to look like a movie villain is a chance I will take. I thought this shade would make that happen. It’s incredibly pigmented but not as opaque as the others, it was very hard to apply and as you can see, it ended up being very uneven. It was the only shade I was disappointed with.
Now if you know me you’ll know that red lipstick is my absolute THING. Any kind of red lip colour I love. This didn’t disappoint. Although it may look a little patchy in the photo I can only blame my over-swatched and chapped lips for that. Every other application of this rich, vintage red has been nothing less than excellent. Similar in looks to MAC’s Ruby Woo and much smoother to apply.
As I keep reiterating, brighter summer shades aren’t always my jam but I didn’t feel like it was fair to not include some. In the tube this was more a nude looking shade but when I applied it, it came out as a very light baby pink. Not really my kind of thing. (Don’t tell anyone I actually kind of liked it though). Again very smooth to apply and pretty even.
This is darker than it looks in the tube. It’s a more autumnal, berry toned purple and in my opinion it would look great with a light berry or golden smoky eye. It was a little harder to apply but I find that the darker the pigment the more uneven it can get,
This was out of the park one of my favourite shades out of the ones I bought. It’s a kind of mauve shade and a suitable dupe for Kylie Jenner’s Posie K. I loved that it made my lips look super full and it went really well with my skin tone. It was also one of the easiest to apply, although, I maybe just had the hang of applying them at this point.
Why not go out and give these a try! You cant always argue against price giving you a better product, but, these lip creams are certainly fantastic for the value of them.

5 Grooming Mistakes Made by Men: Skin Special
Thursday, June 30th, 2016
It’s okay to make mistakes everyone does it. When it comes to grooming mistakes, your skin is involved and we would advise a little more caution…
Obviously not everyone knows what their skin needs; you might not even know if you’ve got combination skin or oily skin. Finding that out and changing your routine accordingly might do wonders if you’re having skin issues. However, there are other things that might be affecting your skin without you even knowing. Defacto are here to give you 5 things that you might be doing wrong and how to change them.
No not if you’re using it on your body, regular soap shouldn’t be used on your face, its acidic and you’re alkaline. A lot of you probably don’t do this but to the few that do, using regular soap on your skin will be drying it out, soaking up the moisture and making it tight and potentially flaky. Using a gentle cleanser will clean your skin and not remove all the natural oils. Using a good moisturiser after cleansing is also recommended.
Messing with ingrown hairs
Ingrown facial hairs look like spots and you might try and pop them but messing with them will make them worse. The way to remove an ingrown hair is using tweezers to gently pull the hair out from under the skin, don’t pull it out as this will just set the hair deeper into the follicle. To prevent them don’t pick at them when you see them and try exfoliating before you shave as this will remove dead skin and create a smoother softer base to shave on. This Keihls Facial Fuel aims to minimise the risk of ingrown hairs.
You’ve forgotten you’re older
The way you ate when you were a teenager isn’t how you should eat now. Sure, pig out every now and then when you want to but regular healthy eating, drinking of water and facial cleansing goes a long way to getting you the skin you want. Also avoid sleeping in your hair product, it’ll clog the pores around your hairline and bring you out in more spots. Showering before you go to bed to get the product out is highly recommended.
Steamy showers are great and theory and even in practice, until you reap what you sow. Overly hot showers dry the skin and encourage rosacea, a skin condition that develops as a bumpy red rash and looks similar to acne; it’s also aggravated by fragrance and alcohol. To avoid this use a redness reducing cleanser that is alcohol and fragrance free.
Not enough protection
Holidays aren’t the only time you should slather in sun cream. The suns UV rays cause ageing no matter what country you’re in. a lot of female make up and beauty products contain SPF and a good variety of men’s ones do too. You can invest in a good sun defense moisturiser that wont leave you with that thick and heavy sun cream feeling for day to day wear.

Barbers Against Hunger!
Tuesday, June 28th, 2016
A great turn out for the Barbers Against Hunger event in Glasgow yesterday.
Organised by Thomas McGovern, Barbers Against Hunger was aiming to raise food donations for the Glasgow South West food banks.
They did just that! After a great turn out at the barbers against hunger event, from both interested people to industry professionals, they managed to get bags full of food they were able to donate for Glasgow. The event was announced as a ‘master-barbering workshop’ and it was just that. 10 barbers from across Scotland showed up with their own models to demonstrate trade (and their own) skills and show the audience how they achieve their sharp cuts. All while Thomas McGovern kept the crowd entertained and updated about what was happening onstage.
The barbers cutting onstage were Graham Jack (educator at the Scottish Barbering School), Jimi Mac (owner of Urban Funk), Heather Atkinson (stylist at Barber & Groom), Ayden McCloysky (stylist at U Concept), Leah Duffin (owner of Pulse Barber), Andrew Middleton (stylist at Men International), Marie Friel (manager at Men International), Tommy Taylor (stylist at Brother Mens), Dale Forrest (founder of the Ayrshire Barbers Collective) and Hazel Marley (director at the Scottish Barbering School). They all showed different cuts of their own choosing on their models.
The event was held in the gorgeous Trades Hall of Glasgow (of which we wrote a brief history on in our account of the history of barbering ‘Bloody Barbers!’) yesterday afternoon. People crowded round the stage to watch the stylists cut and listen to their methods. When we managed to wrangle the incredibly busy Thomas and talk to him about the event he said why he thinks events like this are important:
“They’re important because the escalation of food banks is growing year on year and the dependency for people using food banks is growing. We put this event together so we could use our skills to get much needed food to the food banks, the barbering and hairdressing industries are known as being very giving and we wanted people to get food instead of donations. This is so that people are purchasing food for people they don’t know and the donations are going straight to the source and to the food banks.”
He went on to say:
“Absolutely delighted with the turn out, we’ve got 10 barbers on stage and a packed audience, we’re so happy with the event and we’re hoping to run with it.”
The event was organised by Hairstylists Against Hunger who frequently do charity work for food banks. You can view their Facebook profile HERE.
Why Does Your Hair Thin After Pregnancy?
Friday, June 24th, 2016
Have you noticed thinning hair after you’ve given birth? There’s a reason for that.
Pregnancy has a lot of different side effects; morning sickness, poor sleeping and swelling to name but a few. However, a lot of women notice the thickening of their hair when their pregnant and their skin having that healthy pregnancy glow.
While pregnant your oestrogen levels halt you hair in its cycle. Usually, you lose around 100 hairs a day during the normal cycle but the high levels of oestrogen stop that hair from falling out, meaning that you’re left with the excess hair sitting on your head that you wouldn’t normally have. That’s why pregnant woman have such full, healthy looking hair.
Obviously this means that after you have given birth, your levels are going to decrease to their natural level, unfortunately meaning that you are going to loose that amazing hair build up as its cycle restarts.
The shedding process will most likely to happen throughout the third or fourth month after you’ve given birth and can last up to six! So if during this time your hair comes out more frequently than usual or even in little clumps. There’s no need to panic, its all fine and natural, but if you are lusting after that thicker mane then you can try some of the following tips.
Choose the right hair care – Ensuring that you’re using products that will boost the thickness of your hair is a no brainer. You can get products that claim to do this or you might want to opt for a hydrating shampoo and conditioner. Fine and thinning hair does well with some TLC and some hydration.
Style it well – going to your hairdresser and asking for a look that will give the illusion of thickness might be a good idea. Cutting in layers or cutting it bluntly will make the hair look like it has a greater volume than it actually does. Using rollers and root boosting agents will also add a lot of volume to sparser hair. Backcombing is also an option although this might not be great in excess if you’re looking to avoid further damage to the hair, only subtly tease the roots.
Fake it – you cant really go that wrong with good hair extensions. If you have the means and the patience for them they’ll 100% do the trick. There are a lot to choose from: clip ins, tape ins, weaves, pre-bonded and micro-beading. Be sure to do your research and find out what ones are right for you
Conceal it – if you’re happy to just let the natural fullness come back then you can touch up sparse root areas. For example products like Color Wow Root Cover Up and John Frieda’s Root blur all aim to hide sparse or greying roots.
Don’t worry too much about it happening when it happens, you’re hair will be right as rain in no time!
Tips for Battling Summer Frizz
Wednesday, June 22nd, 2016
Do you suffer from summer frizz? Lets combat that here and now.
Here are five simple every day things that could be causing your frizzy locks.
Lack of moisture
Your hair might be really dry or you might not be conditioning enough or over shampooing. The formula of your shampoo may also have an affect, shampoo with too high of a pH level can actually cause frizziness and breakage. Though brands probably wont advertise their pH levels, you would be able to do some research online. Using leave in treatments when you feel like your hair needs some extra TLC might be a good idea. You can also get conditioning treatments from your salon (use our listing website to find a salon near you!). If you would rather try it from home, affordable options like Aussie’s 3 Minute Miracle are around £4.99.
Wearing your hair up
If you have your hair up all the time you are putting a lot of pressure on it. There will be a lot of tension from being up and tight in a pony tail and that can lead to breakage and split ends, which will inevitably cause frizz.
Although the severe heating element isn’t fantastic for your hair, having them set at the wrong temperature will be even worse. If you have them too high for your hair, it will be scalding your ends and killing them. They wont look healthy if they’ve been burnt to a crisp! Having them too low means you’re going to be over styling to get your hair the way you want it.
How you brush your hair
Particularly before you shower, brushing your hair before you shower, not brushing means that products like conditioner wont distribute evenly. Then you’ll also have a harder time untangling the knots that formed over night. If you get a lot of knotted hair go for a Tangle Teezer or The Wet Brush. Their flexible bristles have been designed to combat knots without leading to breakage. Brush from the bottom of your hair and work the way up.
The culprit you were waiting for, the sun is 100% a cause of frizz. The heat when its very sunny can damage your hair, so if you like sitting out in the sun, avoid the UV damage by using a sun protect spray. This will help you avoid split ends and the dreaded frizz!
We hope these tips help you battle the frizz this summer! Let us know if you have any more tips we missed!
Top 10 Stylish Celebrity Dads
Sunday, June 19th, 2016
Father’s Day has come and gone for another year. In light of this though, we thought we should celebrate some of the most stylish celebrity dads.
We hope everyone got to celebrate their fathers, whether they are with you or not.
Here are 10 stylish; celebrity dads that we think deserve a shout out!
Justin Timberlake, well known singer and actor, ditched the boyband look many years ago and now is well known for his on trend hair and suits. Currently father to one son, Silas, with his wife Jessica Biel, Justin Timberlake is a very stylish dad.
Actor in many people’s film favourites, like The Notebook and Drive, Ryan is father to two daughters Esmeralda and Amada. Though the family is a private one and the avoid showing their children to paparazzi, Ryan and his wife Eva Mendes are a very attractive, stylish couple.
Chris Pratt, known for his roles in Parks and Recreation and Guardians of the Galaxy, is the father to one son, Jack. He has spoken about his love for his son, and his wife Ana Farris, countless times. Though he likes a more laid back look, when he gets suited up he shows his ability to rock a tailored suit.
Controversial rapper Kanye West only seems to smile in the company of his family, wife Kim Kardashian-West and children North and Saint. Kanye has earned his style chops with his own fashion line, but we also bet he’s a fantastic father to his kids.
Thor actor Chris Hemsworth has been seen carrying his children in carriers numerous times. Again his family life is kept relatively quiet but he’s been snapped many a time playing and looking after his three children India and twins Tristan and Sasha. He always looks sharp on the red carpet.
We feel like we always mention David Beckham but he is in these lists for a reason. He is always perfectly styled from head to toe, along with the rest of his family. He’s had four children with wife Victoria Beckham: Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper.
We didn’t actually know til recently that Idris Elba had children but now that we do, we knew he had to go straight onto this list. Father to Winston and Isan, Idris is always impeccably dressed. He’d be a great James Bond, that’s all we’re saying…
Neil Patrick Harris & David Burtka
Now we have two for the price of one here, husbands NPH and David Burtka have a son and daughter. We wait for their Halloween costumes with their children Harper and Gideon every year. 2015 was Star Wars themed and we loved it. Though they dress great they get style points for the costumes alone.
Tom Fletcher is the quirky dad; if you haven’t seen his wedding speech or pregnancy videos you don’t know what you’re missing. His style is a little different to the rest of the people on this list but that’s why we love it, he’s totally individual and a wonderfully geeky father to his sons Buzz and Buddy.
There’s our list, let us know if we’ve missed anyone you think should be a part of it!
New MAC Viva Glam Products Announced
Friday, June 17th, 2016
MAC announces new Ariana Grande Viva Glam shades.
The latest Glam girl is Ariana, and she is releasing a new shocking pinky/purple lipstick and a Mauve lipglass. However, there were many before her.
The Vivia Glam campaign began in 1994 with Drag superstar RuPaul. It was started to raise funds for communities living with HIV and AIDS, it was called the MAC AIDs Fund and it’s said that all profit from the lipsticks sold go to this fund.
The first lipstick by RuPaul was a bold red lip.
Viva Glam II (1997) was fronted by Canadian singer KD Lang, this was a more neutral colour, much more of any everyday shade. Mary J Blige and Lil Kim took up the mantle in 2001.
Blige stayed on in 2002 and was joined by Shirly Manson and Sir Elton John. Then over to Boy George in 2004, he wasn’t the only face of this range. MAC decided to go with more colours and faces. They included: Christina Aguilera, Chloe Sevigny, Linda Evangelista, Missy Elliot and Pamela Anderson.
2006 was another packed year; Debbie Harry, Dita Von Teese, Eve and Lisa Marie Presley were all involved in Viva Glam VI
Viva Glam VI SE (Special Edition) was then fronted by Fergie in 2009 and this was a limited edition line. A lot of people loved this shade, as it was a perfect nude.
In 2010 MAC dropped the numbering system for the campaigns and instead used the names of the celebs. First was a collaboration with Cyndi Lauper and Lady Gaga. Gaga then returned for Viva Glam Gaga 2 in 2011 and she believed that the younger generated needed to be aware that HIV and AIDs were still an issue that needed to be known about.
We then had Ricky and Nicki in 2012, Nicki’s lipstick was one of the best selling colours ever and Ricki brought the first clear, conditioning lipglass to the table. Nicki then stayed on til 2013 with a new colour, which was then followed by a re-release of the original RuPaul Viva Glam I shade.
Rhianna was 2014’s Glam girl, followed by Miley Cyrus in 2015. Now it’s Ariana. She previously released a black lipstick as her first shade, now she’s done a 180 and went with pinks. Her lipstick is a matte shade and her lipglass is shimmery, we think they’re both great summer releases.
They will be available from September, will you be heading out to snap them up?
David Zhang To Do More UK Masterclasses
Wednesday, June 15th, 2016
David Zhang returns to UK for microblading masterclasses.
Following the success of his last visit, eyebrow extraordinaire, David Zhang makes his return to host a series of microblading masterclasses.
If you’re not familiar with microblading (you can read our previous blog on it here) it is a semi permanent make up solution for eyebrows. A small pen-like tool with tiny needles is used to create individual strokes under the eyebrow hair. This gives the illusion of natural hair strands to build thicker looking brows that last for around three years.
Microblading is referred to as ‘eyebrow embroidery’ in Asia, where Zhang hails from and he founded his brand David Brow Art in 1992. During his 24 years working with brows, he has trained 16,000 students, been World Champion in eyebrow beauty competitions twice and is now the leading expert and a judge for the Microblading Expert Panel at the World Microblading Conference.
He has also honed his skills and techniques; including strokes he invented himself, the 6D stroke and the PPL stroke (Press Push Lift). His secrets will be divulged at his 2-day training courses in July. The courses are being promoted by Beautiful Brows and are only suitable for people with professional training in semi permanent make up and/or microblading, as the aim is to help them improve on their trade and skills.
The course will include; brow symmetry, method pros and cons, eyebrow shape vs. face shape, eyebrow design, techniques for eyebrow pencil on human skin and a full David Zhang starter kit. The second day will allow you to recap on what you’ve learned and will also include a Q&A segment with David Zhang.
The courses will be held in Glasgow and Liverpool. With the dates on the 5th and 6th (Glasgow) and the 8th, 9th, 11th and 12th (Liverpool).
This is a fantastic opportunity for professionals to build on a solid base they have created themselves. We spoke to Chris Christoforou, the Scottish Ambassador for Beautiful Brows, and he said:
“He’s back by popular demand, he was sought after in the UK, especially after last time. I think this might be the last masterclass or visit to the UK he has this year; he’s so in demand. If you’re already working in semi permanent make up or microblading, this masterclass will take you to the next level.”
Don’t miss out on this chance to work with a world famous eyebrow artist, call or email beautiful brows for more information on booking!

Tips for Grooms To Be
Friday, June 10th, 2016
On the lead up to the biggest day of a couples life, most people focus on the bride, not the groom. So Defacto are here to offer Tips for Grooms: A Top 10 list of things you should think about before the big day.
Your wedding day is the biggest day of your life no matter whether you’re a man or a woman and no doubt men want to look good too.
Everyone knows that male grooming has become more of a thing of late, which is nice because men look better. So, what should you be thinking about, Tips for Grooms has got your back.
Have a good skin routine on the lead up.
Taking a little more attention on cleansing your face will have a big impact. Focusing on keeping your skin clean on the lead up will keep blemishes at bay. Stress is a big problem when you’re skin conscious and that certainly doesn’t help on the lead up to your wedding day so try preventing it by cleansing your skin at least daily.
Trim your facial hair regularly.
If you like having facial hair but it’s a little unruly, you should trim it in the shape you like once a week on the lead up. This will establish a clean shape that’ll be easier to maintain. It’ll also make you look a lot better groomed.
Get a hair cut a week before.
Getting a haircut a week before is advised. If you get a good cut, after a week it’ll be in its prime, it will still look cleanly cut but will be a lot more pleasing to the eye. Your barber or stylist might always say “it’ll grow into the style” and they do mean it.
Be health conscious.
Healthy food and water will have an affect on you inside and out. You’ll feel better and your skin will look better for it too. A healthy body is a healthy mind.
Try grooming your brows.
We doubt you’ll want heavily groomed, arched eyebrows but a monobrow doesn’t look good either. So, having a professional pluck, wax or thread away excess hairs to give you a nice natural shape isn’t anything to look down on.
Get a dazzling smile.
Marriage is one of the reasons a lot of people visit the dentist and why should you too? Whether you want them straightened or whitened, a trip to your dentist could lead to massive improvements. You can also focus on routine brushing with whitening toothpaste or whitening strips to achieve a whiter smile.
Focus on a classic style.
You want your wedding photos to look good in every decade, so, your suit and hair should lean towards a more classic style. Classic Hollywood icons are a good place to start; neat side partings and slick backs never go out of style. Neither do well tailored wedding suits.
Visit your barber.
Though not for a haircut, a lot of barbers now offer wet shaves with straight razors, going for a group shave with your groomsmen might be a good idea. Although discussing it with your barber of choice when would be best for you to shave might be a good idea. Not all men have the same shaving regime.
Take time on your hands.
Your bride to be isn’t going to want to be holding dry, rough hands when she’s dancing with you. So swallow any masculinity that’s stopping you from getting a manicure and go and get one done. Well-kept hands are always noticed, so are unkempt ones.
Invest in good products.
If you are planning to take on advice from this then investing in good products should be one of them. A lot of time with grooming products what you pay for you get. Invest in good cleansers, aftershave, styling products and a good suit. Everyone will notice but most importantly you will notice.
All in all, it’s always good to take pride in your appearance. Good luck for the big day!
Fathers Day Ideas to Make His Day
Friday, June 10th, 2016
Father’s day is looming, it’s a chance for you to prove that your dad raising you was a good decision.
Not really, but it is nice to make an effort on that one day a year that’s just for him and for you to show your dad you care.
Whether your buying it for your dad or you’re a partner with a young child, so you have to buy something and “pretend” its from your child. We’ve got some ideas for you.
A Fancy (or even not that fancy) shaving kit
It’s a luxuary for a man to have a luxurious shave and having a set in the house to give that feeling might be a pretty good idea!
You can get a pricier one like the Deluxe L’Occitan Collection – £120
Or one like this, from Not On The High Street for £35
A Virtual Reality Headset
We know this one seems ridiculous, but, they aren’t all that expensive. Whether you get what you pay for or not, you are sure to find one in your price range. There’s a Samsung one at £80 and a more affordable option on The Hut at £29.99.
A good belt.
Men need belts, a good belt is a good thing to have, so if your dad’s belt is looking a little shabby why not invest in a good new one for him?
By this we mean a day at a good barbershop of his choosing. Going to a barbershop now isn’t always just getting your hair buzzed and sent on your way. Now you can go, relax, have a beer, a wet shave and the perfect cut. That’s essentially a pamper day for men so give that a thought this father’s day. You can find a great list of barbers on our listing website HERE.
Now if you’re thinking of really splashing the cash, a watch might be a nice thing. Time pieces are impressive and beautiful pieces of artistry. If you want to give your dad something special, and you’ve got money to burn, go for a watch!
A good scent makes an impression, does your dad or partner have a favourite? Repurchase it for him! If they don’t then try something you want or like, that you think they’ll want to wear too.
A brewing kit
If your dad is a big beer fan then why not give him the joy of making his own this father’s day. A lot of beer and ale companies produce their own home brewing kits. Like this Brewdog homebrew kit for £40!
A good new razor or trimmer
Has your dad got some impressive dad style facial hair? Maybe he wants to give a moustache look a go? Getting him a decent facial trimmer or razor would help him on his way!
A subscription box
From beer to pants to food, you can get so many things in subscription boxes these days. Companies like Flavourly (food and drink) and Lootcrate (geeky gifts) will send you our monthly boxes full of stuff that your dad will love.
A day out
It could be a day out with his friends, a day out with you or a day out with his partner, or even just a day out to himself. You can find daily deals on websites like itison or groupon if you’re a little strapped for cash. If youre not, you can always just shop around for what you think your dad will want!
We hope that we’ve helped you source a great father’s day gift. Send us a message or leave us a comment if we have, we’d love to know! Go celebrate with your old man!
