How To Keep Your Holiday Tan For Longer

Friday, July 29th, 2016

So you’re back from your holiday and you’ve got an amazing tan. You want to keep it, right? Of course you do. Don’t worry; we’re here to help you find out how you can keep your holiday tan!

Getting your summer tan and keeping it

We’re going to go through 7 hints and tips to keep your natural tan for as long as possible or ways to cheat your way into accentuating it! So lets get started!

Get ready and keep going

Exfoliation is key

Exfoliation is key

Preparing your skin for your holiday is essential; you’ll get a better tan if you prep your skin beforehand. So obviously exfoliating all the dead skin from your body before you jet off. Removing dead skin allows the tan to take more evenly and though you might not believe it you should do it when you get back as well. A tan takes to your skin deeper than you think so exfoliating the dead skin when you get back wont remove your tan but will stop your skin looking dry.

Be cautious

10-rules-for-healthy-sunbathing
It may be tempting to get there and just park on a sun bed and fry yourself til you get a good tan but that’s not the way to do it. Frying yourself means you’ll burn and peel and that peeling means you will loose the tan you’ve been building up that day. Use a good SPF and take breaks from being in the sun. You’ll get a better and more even tan.

Embrace your home climate

rsz_man-shower-tips-grooming
When you’re home it’ll be undeniably colder, you shouldn’t give into taking warmer showers to get some of that heat back. Showers that are too hot dry out the skin, take cooler showers and invest in nourishing products that contain aloe vera, shea butter or jojoba oil.

Ensure longevity

tanning3
You may hear of tablets and oils that claim to be tan accelerators, these aren’t recommended and may not be too good for your skin. Instead, try tan primers before you head out into the sun or supplements that promote your natural ability to tan. You could also use after sun with a slight self-tanning agent or just before you go, push the boat out and go for a natural fake tan.

Keep your skin hydrated

landscape-1433811939-woman-applying-body-moisturiser
When you get home, you’ll need to be sure that you are keeping yourself hydrated. Drinking lots of water and moisturizing your skin will help your skin stay in good condition.

Fake it

Spray-Tan-1_Glamour_16July15_b
Getting a little boost is nothing to be ashamed about, your tan will fade unevenly so heading to a professional and letting them identify where needs a little filling in. you’ll retain your even tan, even though it might not be the genuine article.

Fake it with fashion

7cceb0caa0ce793a1576c48733ea7da6
Everyone knows the age-old trick of wearing white to make you look more tanned. White isn’t the only colour you should be trying! Pastel colours, like blues and pinks, go a long way to accentuate your natural colouring. If you are dark haired and darker skinned, black will do a lot for you also.

Nobody wants to loose their holiday tan but it’s going to happen eventually, we hope these tips have helped you really get your mileage out of it.

We spoke to Beautiful Brows Scottish Ambassador Chris Christoforou about the evolution of microblading:

“Over the last 3 to 4 years especially it’s become a lot more popular. Europe took it up first and compared to semi permanent make up you can get a much crisper and more defined look. It’s done by hand and if you get a nice cure with it, it looks amazing. It’s a very sought after treatment by consumers.”

He went on to talk about whom the course would benefit:

“Not only people who do semi permanent make up but also people who do lashes and do nails because its very intricate work they do and we think they’d be very good at, so we’ve aimed it for them as well as people who want to learn how to microblade professionally.”

Your Tattoo Could be Poisoning You!

Monday, July 25th, 2016

Inks used in British tattoos may be toxic and facing a ban.

tumblr_lp7ypw8f6O1qbl5mqo1_1280

It has come to light that due to the lack of restriction and checking of tattoo inks, the market has become flooded with cheap and potentially harmful variations.

According to the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), the issues these inks can cause include allergic reactions, itching that can last for years, and elevated cancer risk. The chemicals are not intended to be put into the skin for extensive years and red tattoo inks cause the most health issues, with black, green and blue also causing concern.

tumblr_ns9qhqAODq1up837ko1_500

Roughly 20% of the British public have tattoos and their popularity is only increasing. Tattoo inspiration provided by celebrities and sites like Instagram and Pinterest have only fuelled peoples desire to ink themselves, but unfortunately tattoos don’t have that many restrictions set in place. Obviously there is the age restriction but the inks used in tattoos are not subject to the same regulations as drugs or food. Therefore, it is easy to get away with using cheaper and more toxic inks. A study found that pigments used in tattoo inks had been created for other uses, such as car paint, and were not intended to be in the skin for years. The market has become awash with Chinese inks that are harmful for the skin and tattoo artists agree that more strict regulations have to be set in place.

If you’re considering getting your first tattoo, check out our guide to what to keep in mind:
• Do you really want it? – Make sure it isn’t something you’ll look back on and regret
• Is a matching tattoo a good idea? – Are you 100% certain that whoever you’re going to get one with is going to be there for life?
• Think about your design for a while before you get it done – you don’t want to get it and then realise how it could have been better
• Think about your pain threshold – if you cannot handle a lot of pain you don’t want to get one on your ribs. Find out what places on the body are less painful and see if you’d consider getting one there
• Shop around – don’t just go to the first tattoo artist you find or are recommended, shop around, read reviews and have a look at their work.
• Have a consultation – if you want to create a totally unique design then you can go in for consultations with your artist. This will help you find what you want exactly and allow you to get advice from an expert
• Learn about the aftercare and keep it up! – This goes without saying but if you don’t look after it right it wont look good
• Eat before you go – we know from experience that you need to have lined your stomach before you go, having needles fired into your body for potentially hours is a shock to the system. You want to avoid any fainting episodes

We hope this has informed you about the risks and helped you decided whether or not to get a new inking!

Six Everyday Beauty Uses for Coconut Oil

Wednesday, July 20th, 2016

Its summer and things are hotter and your hair and skin are drier. Yes, you could sink a load of money into products to try and save your hair and skin… or you could try coconut oil.

2016-03-10-1457633472-7768299-coconutoil

Its no secret that people are using coconut oil for whatever they can now, but you might not be aware how easily you can substitute a regular jar of coconut oil for multiple expensive beauty products.

So have a read at our Six Everyday Beauty Uses for Coconut Oil and see what you can substitute for!

Hair Mask

Make-an-Olive-Oil-Hair-Mask-Step-24
Colouring, heating and over brushing your hair can lead to dryness, well before you even include a harsh summer sun. When you’re in the shower, warm up the jar under the water before applying it through the hair, focusing on the dry ends. Put your hair up into a bun and let it sit for at least 5 minutes before rinsing it out. Your hair should feel brand new and brilliantly hydrated.

Make Up Remover

Screen Shot 2016-07-20 at 11.26.51
Finding a make up remover that’s good AND affordable can be such a big ask. Garnier’s Micellar Water has been a huge hit in this regard but it can feel quite drying on the skin. Spreading a thin layer of coconut oil over the face will melt the make up off. Then all you have to do is rinse with warm water before proceeding with your usual cleansing.

Sun Protector

maxresdefault
On holiday, the sun, chlorine and seawater dry out the hair incredibly. Smoothing some coconut oil through your hair before heading to the beach will keep it hydrated, protect it from the UV rays and prevent drying as much as possible.

Light Moisturiser

moisturiser--z
Its light, absorbent and moisturizing formula means that it’s an ideal moisturiser. Warming a small amount in your hands and spreading it over your skin will provide you with wonderfully hydrated, smooth skin. Just as good as any expensive body creams.

Lip Balm

cold_sore_treatment
It doesn’t seem to matter what season it is, your lips still get chapped, guess what can solve that… just use the coconut oil as is and rub a small amount onto your lips and it’ll work wonders. You can even carry a small amount with you in an old contact lens case or an empty lip balm tin.

Shaving Cream

shaving-your-legs
Shaving creams aren’t that expensive, but it seems like a lot of women’s razors are adding on moisture bars to exclude the need for shaving cream, but, this just adds to the price. Using coconut oil on the areas you shave will allow a close shave but also moisturise the skin at the same time. Like the hair mask, just warm the jar under the water and then spread over your legs before shaving.

Have fun duping the expensive products for something you can pick up in your closest super market!

Five Signs of Ageing and How to Fix It

Tuesday, July 19th, 2016

The fear of ageing affects us all, men and women alike. However, men don’t get the coverage on it enough and we bet you’re also wondering how to identify and stop those tell tale signs.

Defacto are bringing you 5 Signs of Ageing and How to Fix It! We hope this helps you hold onto your youth and good looks.

Dark Spots

age-spots-on-hands

Dark spots are so common in ageing, in men and women, they highlight the damage the sun has done over the years. UV rays affect the skin in so many ways, and it causes a lot of ageing signs, however, they can take up to 25 years to develop. This means that those dark spots you’re getting now, might have been due to years ago so if you’re still young you should be making sure you’re taking good care of your skin now. For older skin you should lay off any kind of facial scrubs you’re doing, they lift a layer of skin and make it more susceptible to UV light, use good moisturiser and suncream and focus on eating omega oil rich foods. You should see an improvement.

Wrinkles

Prevent the wrinkles on forehead_1

Another ageing sign caused by the sun, but also, stress, smoking and sugar. Although mens skin ages slower than women’s due to a larger collagen content, sugar can lessen the amount of collagen in your skin, meaning a high sugar diet could also mean A LOT more wrinkles. Alcohol is also a culprit, so avoid the things that cause wrinkles or work out how to battle it. Use a high protection suncream on your face and why not try a proven anti-wrinkle cream like this one from L’Occitane.

Jowels

or_4722c893120292764011051__square

Unfortunately they happen, yes. Again this is down to the deterioration of collagen, which keeps everything firm and in place, it will happen naturally. However, the weakening of your gums has a lot to do with it as well. Good gum retention will also mean you keep your natural teeth longer. When your teeth start falling out, you loose gum mass, this means your face has no support and begins to sag. Investing in a good electric toothbrush that will promote great oral health could have a good impact!

Thinning Hair

thinhair1

This isn’t always a sign of ageing, a great deal of men under the age of 30 deal with thinning hair. Getting the right haircut could be a simple solution if you don’t want to invest in expensive solutions, short back and sides and length on the top will do a lot to disguise thinning hair. Home remedies haven’t been proven to work but Regaine has. Investing in Regaine will promote hair growth and limit the thinning of hair.

Greying Hair

signs of ageing

Max Joseph from MTV’s Catfish

Again, its not always a sign of age. Avoiding this is a lot harder, if its going to happen then its going to happen. You can embrace it and just go grey like MTV Catfish’s Max Joseph or you can dye it. All over head dye doesn’t really look great on ageing men, so try getting a stylist to tactically dye it so you get a little salt and peppering or try a home dye like Just For Men’s Touch of Grey.

We hope this helps you in your quest for youth!

Weaves World Are Here to Save Your Hair!

Friday, July 15th, 2016

Hi I’m Johanna. I’m 18 years old and from Germany.

2016-02-28-23-43-19-453

I’m in Glasgow for the first time because of an internship with Defacto. Today I went with Defacto’s Social Media guru, Natalie, to Masters and Weaves World Glasgow because I have heard a lot different opinions about weaves and I wanted to form my own. I know they are a good way to change your hairstyle completely in a very short time and I have always been interested in having a weave but good ones are very expensive for a student and I wasn’t sure if the money was worth it.

I normally have braids or I just relax my natural hair because I don’t have the time and patience to blow-dry it every morning. I know that relaxing your hair is a very bad way of straightening the hair, that’s why I relax my hair only once every three months, to give it enough time to rebuild from the damage the chemicals have done. After that I usually put olive oil or coconut oil in my hair because the air can be very arid in Germany.

13553269_1132906173426696_1969227168_n (1)

In autumn and winter I usually wear braids because it rains too often in autumn to leave my hair straight without any protection. To me, it doesn’t make any sense when you took so much time straightening your hair to just let the rain destroy your work; it only takes a few raindrops to make your straight hair develop curly areas. With braids you don’t have this problem because it doesn’t matter if your hair gets wet or not, it will always look the same. Having braids in winter makes me feel warmer in the colder temperatures and in spring and summer I mostly have my hair relaxed and straight. I only do it now while I’m still young and my hair is still strong because after a few weeks I feel like I have damaged my hair and like it shouldn’t feel the way it does. That’s when I started to think about weaves because I think that they are the perfect solution for every season. I didn’t know much about them and I’m happy that Ivy, the owner of Masters and Weaves World Glasgow could help me.

13714287_1132906123426701_2058764201_n (1)

The salon is cosy and cute and I felt very comfortable as soon as I stepped in. It has a lot of windows and is furnished with light colours that compliment the space very well. The silver and rose themed details throughout the salon demonstrate Ivy’s attention to detail and love for her space. There are two rooms for customers. The first was more public allowing other people in the room to see you and it has some stations for the stylists to work at. The second room was a lot more private; you can close a door, which would separate the two rooms to be more discreet if a customer looking for more privacy should come.

13689337_1132906246760022_285047577_n (1)

Ivy was very friendly and enthusiastic when she started talking about her salon and the customers. When she explained why she opened the salon you could hear that she’s passionate and, obviously, well informed:

“I’m trying to re-educate the masses, a weave doesn’t have to wreck your hair, I just took mine out yesterday…”

She shows us the length of her hair by indicating with her hands and it’s a fairly decent length.

“… I’ve gone completely natural, no relaxer in my hair and no chemicals and the condition of my hair, its never been healthier and never been stronger. People have a lot of confusing information, they think a weave is extensions and they think that they’ll damage your hair and that that’s the price you pay but I’m trying to show people that isn’t true. It’s a protective method and that’s why it came about.”

13664853_1132906030093377_510183942_n (1)

She tells us that when wearing weaves that you shouldn’t experience damage to your hair or scalp, like many people believe, and that this misinformation is one of the reasons that she set up her shop in the first place. She started Weaves World in June 2011 and has expanded since then, she tells us that she’s always had a passion for hair but didn’t think she could have a career in it. She has done hair from home, braiding and doing cornrows in her living room for years, but it was only in her early 20’s that she decided to make it a business. After going to salons and not getting the treatment she wanted due to her hair type, she decided to do it herself. In her eyes she is her own client, she wants to provide a place where people like her, and me, can go and have their hair done by someone who knows how to do it.

13695140_1132906190093361_1384664975_n (1)

Ivy talks a lot about the history of braiding and dressing hair in Africa. How it was a social thing and, like Ivy herself, women were proud of their hair and well groomed. She also mentions how through slavery and the passing of time the image of the beautiful African woman with dressed hair was lost and replaced with relaxing and trying to make their hair more manageable. It’s fascinating and honest, and she considered herself ‘blessed’ with her hair type and its versatility. She’s glad more and more people are starting to own and experiment with their natural hair, as long as they do it right.

Ivy wearing a full head custom unit to show how varied and natural they can be

Her love for weave shines through, she mentions how much she loves doing them on any client, but particularly the ones that it helps. She has several clients suffering from things like alopecia and trichotillomania (the irresistible urge to pull out your hair). Her weaves and hair pieces have changed their lives, the hair in the weave covers their problem areas and gives them their confidence back as well as protecting the hair and allowing it to grow back. Whether she is working with afro or Caucasian hair she swears by the protective methods of weave, but urges people to be aware you have to look after it properly:

An example of the work of Weaves World. Ivy's Instagram

An example of the work of Weaves World. Ivy’s Instagram

“My ideal client is someone like me, who understands the process, how long theyre going to keep it and how they have to look after it. That way I’ll try and recommend things that suit and are reasonable. When people come in who just want longer hair but expect the damage I aim to reeducate them on how to keep their hair strong, long and healthy.”

In the end, a weave is too expensive for me right now but I know I will get one in the future. I think if you want something like this done you should go to someone like Ivy at Weaves World, she knows exactly what she needs to and how to do it. Her passion and drive is inspiring, you would be in the safest of hands with a woman who will instantly put you at ease and do everything she can to ensure your hair is healthy and beautiful.

Counselling From Your Barber: The Lion’s Barber Collective

Thursday, July 14th, 2016

Barbers are coming together to prevent male suicide.

The Lions Barber Collective Logo

The Lion’s Barber Collective Logo

Barber Tom Chapman has set up a collective of professionals to raise awareness for this issue.

It all started when, Torquay based, Tom Chapman lost his close friend to suicide last year, after that he decided to launch The Lion’s Barber Collective. Suicide is known to be the biggest killer of men under 45 in Britain and they want to kick the stigma of speaking out about how you may be feeling.

The collective was launched in September 2015 and it coincided with World Suicide Prevention Day. It’s made up of 30 barbers from all over Europe who have a passion for the prevention of male suicide and want to raise more awareness for mental health. They want to use their platform to provide a counselling service through barbers, they hope this will allow men to talk with their barber about their problems more openly and in an environment that they are comfortable in. They’ve named the initiative BarberTalk.

Tom Chapman

Tom Chapman

In an interview with Huffington Post last year, Tom Chapman said:

“We already have the trust of our clients and we are in a unique position that we must morally take advantage of – so we can help our clients and provide a safe place to talk,”
“Over time we can smash the taboo and make it okay for men to share their emotions with one another.”

Working with his business partner, Pat, Chapman set up the BarberTalk training programme. This will teach barbers how to identify men who need help, talk to them, listen and advise them. Clients with depression or other mental illnesses will have a safe place and a way to talk about their issues.

Chapman went on to say:

“We know that barbers do not have the time or official training to become councillors,”
“But they will be able to be that first step and point people in the right direction.”

Over 1600 people commit suicide each year and in the UK someone takes their life every 120 minutes. The majority of these people are men. Its important that people discuss their mental health and this collective is important for giving men a place to do just that.

Five Facial Hair Mistakes

Friday, July 8th, 2016

Facial hair has been in, in a big way for a while now and it doesn’t seem to be going away. So if you have a beard, want a beard or you’re growing a beard. You need to know about what you should be doing with it.

Five Beard Folly's (2)

These are our 5 Facial Hair Mistakes, come on over and build your beard knowledge.

Its Not Going to Happen

nobody wants a Bieber beard

Not every man is capable of growing a Gandalf beard, you might only get as far as stubble and you might not even get that far. Your facial hair might be patchy and growing a full beard just might not be what you’re capable of but you can always experiment with different looks and styles to implement what you can grow. Remember when Justin Bieber grew that horrid thing? Nobody wants that.

Not Trimming/Letting it Grow TOO Long

Bad beards can actually happen to good people

Even if you’re trying to grow a lumberjack beard, you still need to make sure it grows out nicely. Letting your beard just grow aimlessly will leave you with straggly ends and that doesn’t look good, it just looks lazy. If you’re facial hair looks course and unruly, it’s unlikely you’re going to have a long luscious beard without a great deal of TLC.

Over-shaving

shaving too much could ruin your look

Similarly, over grooming will be an issue as well. Having a nice beard with a good shape does wonders for those lacking a strong defined jawline. But if your shave it too much its going to end up looking a bit more comical than well groomed. Shave off as little at your cheek as you can while still maintaining a straight line and make sure you don’t have a neck beard. Although shaving right up under your chin to the jawline isn’t advised either.

Using Beard Oil

Beard oil might not always be key to a good beard

Both using it too early and not using it at all. A woman wouldn’t neglect to condition the ends of her long hair and you should feel the same way about your beard. With a long beard, not using beard oil will leave you with scraggly ends and beard dandruff. Yes that’s a thing. It’ll smooth the skin and condition the hair. If you’ve only got stubble or a very short beard then all you need is a good moisturiser, the oil will too much for your skin and cause whiteheads.

Not Looking After the Equipment

keeping your tools clean is important

keeping your tools clean is important

For sure when you have an outstanding beard you’ll need good tools. Trimmers and razors are, obviously, key to perfection in this area. Be sure to keep all your tools clean, trapped hairs and unsterilized equipment will lead to germs and eventual skin issues if you. Clean out any stray hairs and invest in a good disinfectant for clippers. For example, this WAHL Spray for around £10.

All in all you should be proud of your beard and treat it with respect, you’ll look better and feel better for it!

Wella Professionals Launch New Hair Care Line

Wella Professionals launch new System Professional Energy Code™ Mapping
Wella Professional has launched their new products

Wella Professional has launched their new products

The new system will aim to push salons to a place of world-class hair and scalp expertise, with 174 million possible combinations; the experience will be truly unique for each customer.

Initially in salons, the experience was only getting a haircut; now all businesses are clamouring to be the best they can be and to give personalised experiences to individuals. That’s what clients want and System Professional Brand Ambassador Marc Antoni agrees, saying:

“When we first opened, there was no such thing as consultation. It was all about how many heads you could cut in a day… At Marc Antoni, the consultation starts from the moment the client calls or enters our salon. Our receptionists and juniors, right through to our senior stylists know how to ensure every client’s experience is exceptional.”

“If you want a successful service business, then you have to deliver the best. Clients are more than happy to pay extra if they believe they are receiving something better than somewhere else. They want to feel special, wanted and inspired at every visit to ensure they return over and over again.”

The hair system itself is genuinely complex, with a lot of elements. The patented Energy Code™ technology is based on a multifaceted balance of calculated ingredients, to ensure that the Care System recommended will be specific to the client’s hair. To rejuvenate the hair they work with: natural lipids, histidine, caffeine and vitamin B3 amide. They use the condition of your hair to assess what elements they need to add to boost your hair. There are then the 4 treatment options, shown below, Energyz, Essential, Intense and Reborn.

There are also four pillars that they work with to discover what to do with your hair. The actual combination of products used is decided and you can see it HERE in this table. The products are numerous and in many forms but simply put it includes: shampoos, conditioners, oils, masks, emulsions, infusions, serums, lotions, fluids, sprays, definers, foams, elastic forces and mists. We don’t know what an elastic force is but we are keen to find out! The APP is then deployed to let the customer answer some questions about their hair to get the final result. Antoni went on to say:

“The EnergyCoding™ APP has been hugely successful and makes the clients feel
part of the consultation, while not taking the expertise away from the stylist.
EnergyCoding™ is a vital part of ensuring System Professional is a success in salon. It’s all down to the training. When you decide to take on System Professional, the training that you are offered is second to none. My team spent a day learning about the new range, the APP and how they can talk about it with their clients. Each and every one of them loved the range and all of them found the EnergyCode™ Mapping simple and effective… The whole concept of System Professional is about finding your own individual EnergyCode™. Clients are used to using apps, and are impressed when we can do their consultation with a digital tool. We can log information and email the client directly. The app acts as a support as it reminds the client of their products, and before an appointment, we can check to see our client’s last EnergyCode™ to help us give a better and more personalised service. Both staff and clients love the interactivity.”
