Friday, May 27th, 2016
Make up is so fast moving. There are new collections out constantly and we just can’t keep up sometimes!
However, from Kylie’s new liquid lips to budget concealers, we’re going to mention a few beauty products that have been making a splash this week!
We are going to quickly discuss 5 make up pieces that have been getting talked about this week, hopefully you’ll find something you desire in the collection…
Kylie’s Lip Kit in the colour Majesty
This one was obviously going to be here. Kylies lip kits are notoriously good, with matte and metallic lipsticks as well as lip-glosses. Everyone wants one of these. However, fans were keen to see a black lip in the range and Kylie obliged. She debuted the shade on Snapchat, showing off the matte, yet metallic nature of the kit. It even had blue undertones! Needless to say it might not be a day-to-day shade but we want it nonetheless.
Barry M Illuminating Strobe Cream
Yes, yes we know, there is a new highlighter every other day that you NEED to try. It comes in two shades to suit lighter and darker skin tones and its only £4.99 as well so that’s a massive plus! It’s handy and small and applies like a soft sheeny finish. It’s everything you could want and we suggest you give it a go!
Urban Decay’s Vice Collection
As you may know Urban Decay pulled all their lipsticks to release a new collection. This is the vice collection, fronted by Ruby Rose. Vice will feature all of the current UD shades, as well as a few discontinued colours, some limited-edition beauties and a few newbie’s in a whole range of finishes (six, to be exact): Mega Matte, Comfort Matte, Cream, Metalized, Sheer, and Sheer Shimmer. It’s going to be the biggest lipstick launch ever and we cannot wait. The also aim to be really nourishing for your lips with vitamin C, aloe, avocado oil, and babassu oil. Each one will be £15.
Maybelline Fit Me Concealer
Its hard to get an amazing concealer for an amazing price, before it was all about the Collection 2000 Lasting Perfection concealer as a money saving dupe for higher priced brands. Now the Fit Me concealer has stepped in. described as being a long lasting, non-cakey and blendable. Big name beauty bloggers and even make up artists have been talking about their love for this concealer and at £5.99 it’s a good buy too.
Too Faced Sweet Peach Palette
Everyone loves Too Faced palettes with their super blendable pigments and their gorgeous packaging but the Sweet Peach Palette has been getting a lot of love. It has super summery shades, as well as darker ones, and obviously it smells of peaches! Everyone has been raving about it and for good reason! Price – roughly £33
We hope we’ve influenced your next make up splurge if you don’t already have these products in mind!
Ross Parlane, best barber in Manchester?
Friday, May 20th, 2016
Forever seeking out the best barbers in Britain, Defacto spoke with Ross Parlane owner of RPB, a barbershop in the Northern Quarter of Manchester.
We wanted to know why he chose barbering, where he sees the industry going and, of course, who would play him in a movie.
First off, how does it feel to be named one of the best barbers in Manchester by ‘Manchester Confidential’?
“This is actually our second post that we’ve been featured in. we’ve been open for 8 months now and already we’ve been placed pretty high up in lists and also we’ve been named by another magazine so for us to be featured within 8 months of opening and trading is pretty amazing. We’re a pretty unique barbershop in Manchester, our cuts aren’t just a standard barber cut, its not just cuts and skin fades, we specialise in long hair as well. We’re not just all about short hair, we also allow women in, ladies with shorter hair like to come in feel like they’re getting a proper sharp cut. When they go to a ladies salon and they feel like they’re not getting a short enough cut, women want to feel that sharpness as well, just as much as men do.”
I had a look on your Instagram and I saw that you, referring back to your work with women as well, done a patterned undercut on a girl with really long hair.
“I’d never actually done something like that before, a lady contacted me and said that she wanted to donate her undercut to a kids charity, The Little Princess Trust. For me it was pretty special and she had the sickest hair I’ve ever seen and we did an undercut and put a lotus design into it. For me it’s quite a nice thing to give to charity as well and it was nice for a woman to want to come and see us in the barbershop. We took it down to a one and that’s quite tight from a lady and she’s been back so from that we’ve got a customer.”
What actually inspired you to get into barbering?
“I was a ladies hairdresser first to be honest; I worked with ladies hair for years. A guy called Neil Atkinson was my trainer at Mahogany and he showed me everything, short hair and long hair and he’s got me where I am now, one of the best in the hairdressing industry and was like a second dad to me when I left home and moved to Manchester. About two and a half years ago I realised that all my customers were men. Like Football manager David Moyes and a few players from Manchester United Manchester city, and one on loan at Celtic, I still cut David Moyes hair now and I felt like I had to specialise in doing men’s hairdressing and barbering. I moved to a barbershop in Manchester about two and a half years ago and about a year ago I decided to open my own barbershop. Were getting quite a lot of footballers here as well, some good names in football, it’s all about expanding and being the best you can be.”
Obviously your dads Scottish and he has a background in football (Derek Parlane, Rangers and Scotland, for those wondering), are you into football and if so if you had the chance to be Team Captain of Rangers or win barber of the year what one would you choose?
“I’m a massive football fan, Rangers and City, yeah. Wearing a number 9 jersey for Rangers would be a dream for me. Both equal for me though, there’s so many amazing barbers out there now but I’m still young I’m only 27 so you never know what the next 5 years will bring. I feel like I’m really quite young, especially having my own shop and business, such a great industry to be in.”
What’s your favourite kind of style to work with?
“For me my favourite style varies on the client. Not everyone will suit having a skin fade, not everyone will suit having a crop. You’ve got to look at the client’s lifestyle and face shape. The slick back was a big thing last year but right now I’m enjoying the crop. Textured or blunt, it’s a big style in Manchester at the moment.”
The style of your shop, the interior is sort of industrial but minimalist, did you come up with that yourself?
“Yeah I designed it all myself, me and my friend Mark Turnpenny, he’s an electrician we spent 5 weeks kitting the shop ourselves, stripping it back to an industrial feel with the raw ceiling and the retro chairs. We’ve also added some old vintage style furniture in our reception area, we have an old school bench at our bar and then we have a 1920s old hospital bed side tables and sections for our drawers. We imported them from Slovakia, we’ve got an industrial yet vintage feel, and I’m not really a big fan of the old school retro barbershop thing so this is what inspired me.”
Like you said you’ve got a bar and a little coffee shop, why is that?
“We’re the only licensed barbershop in Manchester, we’ve got a full alcohol licensed. We’ve had companies like Jamieson’s and Guinness who supply us with large selections of lager. It was amazing PR for them and we were giving them all out to our clients and we recently had a rum company called Old J come and set up the bar and had a guy doing drinks for us at the bar. Yeah it’s a totally different vibe to any other barbershop. It’s quite a cool thing being a fully licensed barbershop. We want to be different we spend a lot of time doing the cuts, at least 45 minutes and you want to reach the kind of service they’re after really. I have a fantastic team, I have a young 19 year old who works with me and he’s going to be amazing, I have a young lad who works on a Saturday and I’m training him up once a week and I’ve got my eye on him as a rising star and a special mention to Dan Burgess who is amazing and a great right hand man.”
You’re obviously working with some up and coming talent, so where do you see barbering heading in the future?
“Every Tuesday night, every week I spend time training the boys up; I put what I learn into what I teach them. I don’t want to be that guy who doesn’t spread the knowledge and they’re soaking it up like a sponge really. For me the thing I want to apply to barbering and the thing I think is quite important is that scissor cutting is still in there. I think a lot of people are getting skin fades now and for me how long is a skin fade going to last? So for me what I’m trying to teach my lads is that the art is in the scissor cutting so I want the boys to understand that its not all about picking up a clipper. For me long hair is going to come back again and people who are just picking up clippers in college are going to be lost and confused. So for me my apprentice wont be picking up clippers until I feel that he is confident enough.”
If they made a movie about your life, who would play you?
“Leonardo DiCaprio… Nah I’m only joking! Eh I quite like the guy who was a main actor in skins… I can’t remember his name. He’s been in quite a lot. I quite like him to be honest. He’s a great British talent and I think he’s a great actor. I like him.” (Interviewers note: The actor is called Jack O’Connell, we got there in the end!)
If you won the lottery tomorrow, how would it change your life?
“It wouldn’t change my life at all I’d still keep doing what I’m doing, I’d just go on more holidays. I’ll always be barbering; I’ll never stop doing what I love.”

Cannes Film Festival 2016 Best Outfits
Thursday, May 12th, 2016
Currently the 69th annual Cannes Film Festival is taking place.
The event is being held from 11 to 22 May 2016 and like every other year before it, it will feature films from all genres and from all around the world.
The Cannes film festival was founded in 1946 and is one of the most publicised film festivals in the world, so of course this makes it a star-studded event. This year’s chosen opening film is Woody Allen’s Café Society and the red carpet for this film offered up some beautiful outfits. We’re going to show you our favourites.
Jessica Chastain stepped out in a yellow Armani gown.
The strapless dress cinches in at her waist and creates a beautiful hourglass silhouette. The silky fabric and the style of the dress give the impression of old Hollywood Glamour. Pairing the yellow dress with her red hair and rosy skin was a great decision as they work together perfectly.
Robert Cavalli was Bella Hadid’s designer of choice with her Cavalli Couture dress.
The models slender frame suits the gown ideally. It drapes over her and creates a beautiful showcase of the Swarovski crystals embedded in the gown. It has a 1920’s feel and fits in with the glamour of the Cannes Film Festival.
Victoria Beckham wore a jumpsuit from her own collection.
She is well known for sleek and chic fashion choices and designs and this was no different. The jumpsuit is simple and complimentary of her small frame. Not wearing a necklace accentuates her long neck and the strapless top and chunky diamond bangles make the outfit more feminine.
Naomi Watts looked girly and elegant in her Armani Prive dress.
The simple slinky dress is covered in embellishment to take it from what may have been a completely plain dress to an eye-catching red carpet ready number. Her chunky jewellery adds a quirky element and ties in nicely with her light pink lip.
Finally, Kirsten Dunst was the epitome of femininity in her floor length Gucci dress.
The large poppy detailing really makes her dress stand out. The red and pink look beautiful together, with the black ribbon trying in the black outlining around the flowers. Her simple up do and smoky eyes work perfectly wit the overall look.
Do you have a favourite Cannes look so far this year?
Beckham Beauty Range?
Monday, May 9th, 2016
David Beckham, famous for football and fragrances is now trying his hand at something else.
Teaming up with Biotherm, Beckham is taking on the skincare world with his own grooming range.
Its well known that Beckham’s career in football opened many doors to him, with Pepsi adverts and his fragrance empire. He is a household name and his men’s scent ‘Instinct’ is up there with the best selling celebrity fragrances of all time.
However, despite his endless franchises, endorsements and charity events, apparently David Beckham can still manage to try his hand at another new venture. His collaboration with Biotherm will add the world of skincare to his repertoire.
Biotherm is a luxury skincare brand, originating from France, and now owned by L’Oreal under their Luxury Products division. The Biotherm name derives from profession of the founder Mme Jeanie Marissal, a biologist, and thermal plankton. Thermal Plankton is an ingredient found in all Biotherm products, supposedly a key to healthy skin and a potent skin rejuvenator. In 1952, Mme Jeanie, acquired intellectual property rights to thermal plankton and from then on she used it in skin care products.
With previous faces of the Biotherm Homme line including Sex and the City actor Chris Noth, its clear Biotherm have an idea of the kind of man they want to attract. However, according to WWD, not only will Beckham be the face of the new Biotherm Homme line, he will also co-create the collection of men’s grooming products, set to launch next year.
Beckham is notoriously well groomed, with his good looks and perfectly styled hair he’s the fantasy and inspiration of many, we’re sure. His style has encouraged many men to have a go at a more gentlemanly look with slicked back hair and he is no stranger to a beauty regimen. In the past, he’s admitted to taking beauty tips from his wife, Victoria Beckham. She once famously said that she and David share their beauty products and he’s even admitted to enjoying a manicure over any other pampering treatment when he’s feeling indulgent.
If anyone’s suited to be the face of a men’s grooming line, then it’s got to be David Beckham.
So what do you think? Are you looking forward to Beckham’s contribution to the beauty industry?
4 Mens Hairstyles for Spring/Summer 2016
Wednesday, May 4th, 2016
We’re now well into spring and on the way to summer, so why not revamp your style to suit the season?
It seems like women get the majority of the attention when it comes to summer style, particularly in the hair department, but Defacto are here to bring you some new ideas for your spring/summer barnet.
Male grooming is more important than ever and so it should be! So, take pride in your appearance and have a look at our 4 suggestions for your next hair appointment.
The days of the slicked quiff are over, now its all about texture and volume. You’ll want to have a good bit of length at the top, with the use of point cutting to create the texture and ensure you keep a bit more length at the fringe to create the actual quiff.
A no. 4 on the back and sides is recommended but if you’re looking for a more dramatic cut you will want to maybe go a little shorter.
To style it try putting hair putty or hair paste into towel dried hair. For extra volume and hold you can try your hand at salt spray, a great product for creating texture.
This is a messy style with a lot of texture and is ideal for those with short-mid length hair. This style suits most face shapes but the more defined and angular your bone structure is then the shorter you can go at the back and sides to highlight your features.
You can style it by applying a very small amount (around the size of a pea) to towel dried hair before blow-drying the remaining moisture. Try a matte paste to show off your natural texture. Use products that have a firm hold but don’t dry hard, you don’t want to loose flexibility and movement from the hair.
Longer hair on men has been a growing trend for a while now. Especially with the recent man bun trend. Long hair looks best with full facial hair or a bit of stubble and is most suited to men with masculine faces.
Keep in mind that long hair takes patience (around 8 to 12 months of no length cutting). Product wise its best to just let the hair fall in its natural state. The less product, the better. Just be sure to invest in a good quality conditioner.
A classy haircut that never really goes out of style. It’s versatile in the way that it suits both a working and a social life if you’re in a serious business setting. Hair on the side can be clippered to around an inch long, with at least four inches on the top to make sure the slicked style will stay in place.
To style it, run a comb through wet hair to set it in a natural parting. Then apply gel or pomade to set the style in place.
Do you think you’ll try something new or stick with your old favourite do?

The Stars Shine at the Met Gala 2016
Tuesday, May 3rd, 2016
Yesterday marked 2016’s annual Met Gala.
The night of the year where celebrities and influential people gather at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and participate in the themed black tie event.
This years theme and exhibit was “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an age of Technology”. This aims to explore the relationship between clothes created by hand as opposed to clothes created by mass production (the machine). Haute Couture Vs fast produced garments to meet high demand. The Exhibit charts the evolution of fashion from the creation of the sewing machine to the current mass production of clothes we see today.
Anna Wintour and Apple’s Jonathan Ive came together to be the events co-chairs and as expected metallics and slicked back hair were a strong feature of the night. However, more accessible brands like J Crew and H&M were also seen on the red carpet by stars like Hailee Steinfeld and Lena Dunham.
Here at Defacto we want to show you our six favourite looks of the night.
Starting with Beyonce and her latex Givenchy dress.
We didn’t think she could top her sheer detailed dress from last year but here we are. The nude latex dress, with puffy shoulders, was studded with pearls, which reportedly cost £8000 per pearl! She also sported sleek straight hair and smoky eyes.
Zendaya is a total chameleon on the red carpet. This time around she wore a slinky Michael Korrs dress.
She’s the only person we’ve known that can make a bowl cut look good. Her sleek do coupled with her gold metallic gown made her look like some kind of futuristic queen.
Blake Lively is known for her elegant gowns at the MET Gala but this years Burberry dress was something else.
The pink gown features red floral detailing and a long trailing cape. Her classy up-do, simple red lip and her low key make up truly made her look like a princess.
Lupita Nyong’o impressed everyone with her towering hair do but she impressed us with her style and her Calvin Klein dress.
This dress is from a collection which Emma Watson and Margo Robbie also wore dresses from. The shimmering sea foam green metallic elements of the dress make it so eye-catching. The shaping and the plunge neckline are truly a compliment to her figure and this dress and look as a whole were a standout of the night.
Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid made their red carpet debut as a couple. Therefore they are being judged as one.
Zayn wore a custom made Versace suit and opted for a metal gauntlet and arm piece instead of a tie. His fashion choice here really incorporated the theme of the night and went well with Gigi’s Tommy Hilfiger dress. Her strapless bodice was tied together with a semi sheer skirt. The fabric continues up to a choker around her neck and is cinched in at the waist with a metallic belt. Great couple outfit!
Lastly, Claire Danes showed up looking like a modern day Cinderella in a Zac Posen ball gown.
The full skirt and structured bodice is a timeless and simple design choice but somehow this gown is still so striking and impressive. The way the fabric folds and kicks out is so beautiful. That’s not all though. It turned out that us wondering how this may have incorporated the machine aspect of the night wasn’t necessary as her dress literally lit up!
So many striking and beautiful looks at the Met Gala this year, did you have a favourite?
Vlogger Farah Dhukai Shows us surprising Dandruff Home Remedy
Saturday, April 30th, 2016
Do you want to get rid of your dandruff? Then keep reading!
This potentially money saving trick will have you replacing your Head and Shoulders with an entirely different product.
Listerine. Or even just regular mouthwash. Canadian Vlogger Farah Dhukai posted a video to her YouTube channel demonstrating how she gets rid of those pesky flakes.
In the video she mixes one part Listerine to one part water in a spray bottle. So, half and half of each solution is the way to go. Give it a little shake to mix it together and apply directly to the scalp. Let it sit for a while and then wash it out! Apparently your scalp should feel clean, tingly and, most importantly, dandruff free.
However, although this is the first we’ve seen mouthwash being used as a solution for dandruff in recent times, Farah isn’t the first person to have thought of this. In the 1950s Listerine was literally sold as an anti dandruff solution. It can be assumed they realised its potential for breath freshening and mouth cleaning at some point down the line.
Apparently, it’s the menthol, thymol, eucalyptol and methyl salicylate within products like Listerine, which is so effective. Experts are inclined to agree. When speaking to Huffington Post UK, trichologist from Philip Kingsley, Carole Michaelides has said:
“Mouthwash such as Listerine can indeed help treat dandruff. It doesn’t specifically target the malassezia yeast pityrosporum ovale that is thought to be primarily associated with dandruff, but it could have a mildly antifungal effect and help reduce irritation.”
When we at Defacto have dandruff issues we’ll be giving it a go so why don’t you give it a try! Tell us if it works or if you’ve tried it before.
You can watch Farah’s video HERE

Mac’s Glasgow is fun and feminine. We spoke to Mel Currie, Owner of Mac’s Glasgow, and she said:
“We won Extentionist of the Year last year at The Look Awards, so there is great pressure on us on this the second year. 2015 was an amazing year for us, not only because we were recognised as Scotland’s best hair extensionists, but also because we were able to develop our business at such a rate that we are now considering opening further salons in Glasgow. Looks like we will have to hire more staff to cope with the rush!”
Slicks Barbershop on Duke Street in Glasgow is a modern barbershop. With a cool and comfortable interior, you’re going to get a fantastic haircut and be able to unwind.
“We opened three years ago, myself (Greg) and Eric, just the two of us but now we have 9 full time members of staff, and 4 college placements so we feel the rate of growth has been massive for us. We are very open to education and recognise the value in that. Our salon is unique with wall and window murals by Designer Craig Black. We have a really cool atmosphere, our customer service and educating our staff is of prime importance. We also dedicate time out of ordinary shop hours for those clients with Autism and we are also taking part in the Summer with Autism Assemble.”
Defacto’s Director Marcus McLeod has said: “It is important that companies, such as ourselves, give back to the industry by way of supporting awards. Encouraging salons across Scotland to participate creates a view of how the hair and beauty sector is preforming. The competition for places was incredible in 2015 year and it is even greater this year. The judging format is impressive and stands out from other similar awards. We are confident that the awards will again be another huge success this year and we look forward to a great night on the 15th May.”

Defacto Salons at the Scottish Hair and Beauty Show 2016
Wednesday, April 27th, 2016
On Monday we attended this years Scottish Hair and Beauty Show!
The exhibition was held in the Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh and featured many names in the Scottish and British hair and beauty industry.
Our very own Natalie and Yvonne arrived for the opening of the event, to try out new products and to give you the best information on them they could!
The winding walkway through the different exhibitors was a bright pink carpet, leading us to our first stand, which was Beautiful Brows. Featured heavily in the beauty industry, beautiful brows are a semi permanent solution to thin pale brows. Offering products from brushes to a full eyebrow kit, Beautiful brows is a well established brand and through encouragement from their Scottish distributor Chris Christoforou, Yvonne was eager to give it a try. Using their brow stencil and a dark brown powder they swept back and forth over Yvonne’s brows, they thickened and lengthened her brows.
We also visited Novalash where Natalie tried out their crème eye shadows and eyeliner set, which was used also as a lipstick and lip liner! The eye shadows were pigmented and when used on the lips they had the consistency of a matte lipstick. The product didn’t feel tacky and lasted all day without creasing or causing chapped lips. A definite if you’re looking for a multipurpose product.
After making a pit stops at some demonstrations by Slick Barbers and the prosecco and cupcake bar, we went on to Max Estrada’s stall. Famous for his cutesy nail art, his skill isn’t to be underestimated. When we arrived he was working on a client, crafting a hand created rosebud.
His talent was evident from his creations and attention to detail. The Max Estrada stall was swamped with customers clamouring to get some of his products. No doubt he had people lined up to get their nails done.
A pleasant surprise at the event was the Ivy Dental stall, there promoting their dental clinic and their new lip filler procedure. They also gave away bags of dental goodies and that’s always a plus!
Dermologica was definitely towering over the rest of the exhibitors with a huge placement near the entrance, selling all their products. Dermologica is a fantastic brand for people looking to improve their skin. With products suitable for all types of skin, if what you’re using isn’t fully working for you then we recommend you give their products a try. Passing by Dermologica and heading to the back of the event hall we ran into a small stall called Golden Curl and they were offering up their new curling and straightening tongs. Natalie happily volunteered to be their guinea pig.
The tongs fully curled a section into a loose ringlet of hair in seconds. Very impressive and would probably cut some people hair routine by a considerable amount. The heat stylers also managed to bring out the natural shine in hair and we were pleased with the result.
Barclay Wolf were offering a new option for hair extensions that removes the damage level of bonded ones and the discomfort of clip ins. Tape in hair extensions is the way to go! With Barclay Wolf’s genius idea of having your extensions in a jar instead of a plastic wrapper they remove the annoyance of trying to fir your clip-ins’ back into the bag afterwards. They are removable, reusable and undetectable. They can last up to three months from the first insertion. We have an upcoming video and article on the way explaining how they are applied and showing how they look at the end. With both highlights and a full head of extensions. So keep an eye out for that!
Yvonne had a go at getting some highlights and she has assured us that they are weightless and barely even noticeable when she’s sleeping. Thanks Barclay Wolf!
Our last stop (as the exhibition was closing) was Nail Gaga. Established down south and trying to break into the market up here. They offer bright and interesting colours for your nails. They also sell professional brushes (with added diamantes in the stems) for whoever would like to try their hand at nail art.
Overall, the event was fantastic and offered a good look at what’s available in the hair and beauty industry for both customers and professionals. We’re looking forwards to attending again next year!
