Accessorising the Modern Man
Monday, September 26th, 2016
There are so many options for accessories when it comes to women. What about accessorising for the modern man?
We know the two obvious ones, which we’ll get out of the way first, man-bags and watches. But, are there other options for men to style their outfit? Are there more options than the two well-known staples? We think so.
Briefcases have been out for a while. They’re difficult to carry and not as cool as they used to be. The era of the man-bag has been reigning for a while now. A man-bag is a great way of accessorising an outfit. It’s practical too, it’ll hold all the stuff you need for your working day and it looks great too.
Watches have always been a key component in mens accessorising. However, now its arguable that look is coming before name. a rising name in the watch world is MVMT. Incredibly stylish looking watches with an affordable price tag. They look the part but don’t cost it. A more casual, versatile watch is becoming more desirable over the flashy big brand names. We kind of prefer that.
The wrong belt can ruin an outfit. So ensuring that you’ve got the right one on with the right outfit is key. Leather belts are always the winners in our eyes. They never go out of style and they compliment what you’re wearing. They key to wearing leather is to match it with the other leather you’re wearing. Brown leather shoes with a brown leather belt. It’s a simple way of remembering what you should wear but it’s also fool proof.
It seems that vintage and retro styles of glasses are back in. Ray-Ban clubmasters and thick rimmed frames are mostly what we’ve been seeing right now. A good way to stand out from the crowd is to go for some statement eyewear. However, you have to be sure that you pick the right frames for your face shape. You can see which style of glasses you should be accessorising with HERE.
This is a bit of a different one. Most luxury runway looks stay there. They’re too expensive. Too impractical. They’re the kind of thing that looks good in fashion mags, then like hell in the street. However, we think that neckties are something that could work on men with certain styles. They add a little individuality, something that can be a bit harder to come by in mens fashion. If you think you could rock a necktie we fully support you!
Is there anything we’ve missed? Do you think guys should bring back accessorising with leather wristbands or shark-tooth necklaces? Let us know by commenting!
How To Keep Your Holiday Tan For Longer
Friday, July 29th, 2016
So you’re back from your holiday and you’ve got an amazing tan. You want to keep it, right? Of course you do. Don’t worry; we’re here to help you find out how you can keep your holiday tan!
We’re going to go through 7 hints and tips to keep your natural tan for as long as possible or ways to cheat your way into accentuating it! So lets get started!
Get ready and keep going
Preparing your skin for your holiday is essential; you’ll get a better tan if you prep your skin beforehand. So obviously exfoliating all the dead skin from your body before you jet off. Removing dead skin allows the tan to take more evenly and though you might not believe it you should do it when you get back as well. A tan takes to your skin deeper than you think so exfoliating the dead skin when you get back wont remove your tan but will stop your skin looking dry.
It may be tempting to get there and just park on a sun bed and fry yourself til you get a good tan but that’s not the way to do it. Frying yourself means you’ll burn and peel and that peeling means you will loose the tan you’ve been building up that day. Use a good SPF and take breaks from being in the sun. You’ll get a better and more even tan.
Embrace your home climate
When you’re home it’ll be undeniably colder, you shouldn’t give into taking warmer showers to get some of that heat back. Showers that are too hot dry out the skin, take cooler showers and invest in nourishing products that contain aloe vera, shea butter or jojoba oil.
You may hear of tablets and oils that claim to be tan accelerators, these aren’t recommended and may not be too good for your skin. Instead, try tan primers before you head out into the sun or supplements that promote your natural ability to tan. You could also use after sun with a slight self-tanning agent or just before you go, push the boat out and go for a natural fake tan.
Keep your skin hydrated
Getting a little boost is nothing to be ashamed about, your tan will fade unevenly so heading to a professional and letting them identify where needs a little filling in. you’ll retain your even tan, even though it might not be the genuine article.
Fake it with fashion
Everyone knows the age-old trick of wearing white to make you look more tanned. White isn’t the only colour you should be trying! Pastel colours, like blues and pinks, go a long way to accentuate your natural colouring. If you are dark haired and darker skinned, black will do a lot for you also.
Nobody wants to loose their holiday tan but it’s going to happen eventually, we hope these tips have helped you really get your mileage out of it.

Top 10 Stylish Celebrity Dads
Sunday, June 19th, 2016
Father’s Day has come and gone for another year. In light of this though, we thought we should celebrate some of the most stylish celebrity dads.
We hope everyone got to celebrate their fathers, whether they are with you or not.
Here are 10 stylish; celebrity dads that we think deserve a shout out!
Justin Timberlake, well known singer and actor, ditched the boyband look many years ago and now is well known for his on trend hair and suits. Currently father to one son, Silas, with his wife Jessica Biel, Justin Timberlake is a very stylish dad.
Actor in many people’s film favourites, like The Notebook and Drive, Ryan is father to two daughters Esmeralda and Amada. Though the family is a private one and the avoid showing their children to paparazzi, Ryan and his wife Eva Mendes are a very attractive, stylish couple.
Chris Pratt, known for his roles in Parks and Recreation and Guardians of the Galaxy, is the father to one son, Jack. He has spoken about his love for his son, and his wife Ana Farris, countless times. Though he likes a more laid back look, when he gets suited up he shows his ability to rock a tailored suit.
Controversial rapper Kanye West only seems to smile in the company of his family, wife Kim Kardashian-West and children North and Saint. Kanye has earned his style chops with his own fashion line, but we also bet he’s a fantastic father to his kids.
Thor actor Chris Hemsworth has been seen carrying his children in carriers numerous times. Again his family life is kept relatively quiet but he’s been snapped many a time playing and looking after his three children India and twins Tristan and Sasha. He always looks sharp on the red carpet.
We feel like we always mention David Beckham but he is in these lists for a reason. He is always perfectly styled from head to toe, along with the rest of his family. He’s had four children with wife Victoria Beckham: Brooklyn, Romeo, Cruz and Harper.
We didn’t actually know til recently that Idris Elba had children but now that we do, we knew he had to go straight onto this list. Father to Winston and Isan, Idris is always impeccably dressed. He’d be a great James Bond, that’s all we’re saying…
Neil Patrick Harris & David Burtka
Now we have two for the price of one here, husbands NPH and David Burtka have a son and daughter. We wait for their Halloween costumes with their children Harper and Gideon every year. 2015 was Star Wars themed and we loved it. Though they dress great they get style points for the costumes alone.
Tom Fletcher is the quirky dad; if you haven’t seen his wedding speech or pregnancy videos you don’t know what you’re missing. His style is a little different to the rest of the people on this list but that’s why we love it, he’s totally individual and a wonderfully geeky father to his sons Buzz and Buddy.
There’s our list, let us know if we’ve missed anyone you think should be a part of it!
New MAC Viva Glam Products Announced
Friday, June 17th, 2016
MAC announces new Ariana Grande Viva Glam shades.
The latest Glam girl is Ariana, and she is releasing a new shocking pinky/purple lipstick and a Mauve lipglass. However, there were many before her.
The Vivia Glam campaign began in 1994 with Drag superstar RuPaul. It was started to raise funds for communities living with HIV and AIDS, it was called the MAC AIDs Fund and it’s said that all profit from the lipsticks sold go to this fund.
The first lipstick by RuPaul was a bold red lip.
Viva Glam II (1997) was fronted by Canadian singer KD Lang, this was a more neutral colour, much more of any everyday shade. Mary J Blige and Lil Kim took up the mantle in 2001.
Blige stayed on in 2002 and was joined by Shirly Manson and Sir Elton John. Then over to Boy George in 2004, he wasn’t the only face of this range. MAC decided to go with more colours and faces. They included: Christina Aguilera, Chloe Sevigny, Linda Evangelista, Missy Elliot and Pamela Anderson.
2006 was another packed year; Debbie Harry, Dita Von Teese, Eve and Lisa Marie Presley were all involved in Viva Glam VI
Viva Glam VI SE (Special Edition) was then fronted by Fergie in 2009 and this was a limited edition line. A lot of people loved this shade, as it was a perfect nude.
In 2010 MAC dropped the numbering system for the campaigns and instead used the names of the celebs. First was a collaboration with Cyndi Lauper and Lady Gaga. Gaga then returned for Viva Glam Gaga 2 in 2011 and she believed that the younger generated needed to be aware that HIV and AIDs were still an issue that needed to be known about.
We then had Ricky and Nicki in 2012, Nicki’s lipstick was one of the best selling colours ever and Ricki brought the first clear, conditioning lipglass to the table. Nicki then stayed on til 2013 with a new colour, which was then followed by a re-release of the original RuPaul Viva Glam I shade.
Rhianna was 2014’s Glam girl, followed by Miley Cyrus in 2015. Now it’s Ariana. She previously released a black lipstick as her first shade, now she’s done a 180 and went with pinks. Her lipstick is a matte shade and her lipglass is shimmery, we think they’re both great summer releases.
They will be available from September, will you be heading out to snap them up?
Fathers Day Ideas to Make His Day
Friday, June 10th, 2016
Father’s day is looming, it’s a chance for you to prove that your dad raising you was a good decision.
Not really, but it is nice to make an effort on that one day a year that’s just for him and for you to show your dad you care.
Whether your buying it for your dad or you’re a partner with a young child, so you have to buy something and “pretend” its from your child. We’ve got some ideas for you.
A Fancy (or even not that fancy) shaving kit
It’s a luxuary for a man to have a luxurious shave and having a set in the house to give that feeling might be a pretty good idea!
You can get a pricier one like the Deluxe L’Occitan Collection – £120
Or one like this, from Not On The High Street for £35
A Virtual Reality Headset
We know this one seems ridiculous, but, they aren’t all that expensive. Whether you get what you pay for or not, you are sure to find one in your price range. There’s a Samsung one at £80 and a more affordable option on The Hut at £29.99.
A good belt.
Men need belts, a good belt is a good thing to have, so if your dad’s belt is looking a little shabby why not invest in a good new one for him?
By this we mean a day at a good barbershop of his choosing. Going to a barbershop now isn’t always just getting your hair buzzed and sent on your way. Now you can go, relax, have a beer, a wet shave and the perfect cut. That’s essentially a pamper day for men so give that a thought this father’s day. You can find a great list of barbers on our listing website HERE.
Now if you’re thinking of really splashing the cash, a watch might be a nice thing. Time pieces are impressive and beautiful pieces of artistry. If you want to give your dad something special, and you’ve got money to burn, go for a watch!
A good scent makes an impression, does your dad or partner have a favourite? Repurchase it for him! If they don’t then try something you want or like, that you think they’ll want to wear too.
A brewing kit
If your dad is a big beer fan then why not give him the joy of making his own this father’s day. A lot of beer and ale companies produce their own home brewing kits. Like this Brewdog homebrew kit for £40!
A good new razor or trimmer
Has your dad got some impressive dad style facial hair? Maybe he wants to give a moustache look a go? Getting him a decent facial trimmer or razor would help him on his way!
A subscription box
From beer to pants to food, you can get so many things in subscription boxes these days. Companies like Flavourly (food and drink) and Lootcrate (geeky gifts) will send you our monthly boxes full of stuff that your dad will love.
A day out
It could be a day out with his friends, a day out with you or a day out with his partner, or even just a day out to himself. You can find daily deals on websites like itison or groupon if you’re a little strapped for cash. If youre not, you can always just shop around for what you think your dad will want!
We hope that we’ve helped you source a great father’s day gift. Send us a message or leave us a comment if we have, we’d love to know! Go celebrate with your old man!
Ross Parlane, best barber in Manchester?
Friday, May 20th, 2016
Forever seeking out the best barbers in Britain, Defacto spoke with Ross Parlane owner of RPB, a barbershop in the Northern Quarter of Manchester.
We wanted to know why he chose barbering, where he sees the industry going and, of course, who would play him in a movie.
First off, how does it feel to be named one of the best barbers in Manchester by ‘Manchester Confidential’?
“This is actually our second post that we’ve been featured in. we’ve been open for 8 months now and already we’ve been placed pretty high up in lists and also we’ve been named by another magazine so for us to be featured within 8 months of opening and trading is pretty amazing. We’re a pretty unique barbershop in Manchester, our cuts aren’t just a standard barber cut, its not just cuts and skin fades, we specialise in long hair as well. We’re not just all about short hair, we also allow women in, ladies with shorter hair like to come in feel like they’re getting a proper sharp cut. When they go to a ladies salon and they feel like they’re not getting a short enough cut, women want to feel that sharpness as well, just as much as men do.”
I had a look on your Instagram and I saw that you, referring back to your work with women as well, done a patterned undercut on a girl with really long hair.
“I’d never actually done something like that before, a lady contacted me and said that she wanted to donate her undercut to a kids charity, The Little Princess Trust. For me it was pretty special and she had the sickest hair I’ve ever seen and we did an undercut and put a lotus design into it. For me it’s quite a nice thing to give to charity as well and it was nice for a woman to want to come and see us in the barbershop. We took it down to a one and that’s quite tight from a lady and she’s been back so from that we’ve got a customer.”
What actually inspired you to get into barbering?
“I was a ladies hairdresser first to be honest; I worked with ladies hair for years. A guy called Neil Atkinson was my trainer at Mahogany and he showed me everything, short hair and long hair and he’s got me where I am now, one of the best in the hairdressing industry and was like a second dad to me when I left home and moved to Manchester. About two and a half years ago I realised that all my customers were men. Like Football manager David Moyes and a few players from Manchester United Manchester city, and one on loan at Celtic, I still cut David Moyes hair now and I felt like I had to specialise in doing men’s hairdressing and barbering. I moved to a barbershop in Manchester about two and a half years ago and about a year ago I decided to open my own barbershop. Were getting quite a lot of footballers here as well, some good names in football, it’s all about expanding and being the best you can be.”
Obviously your dads Scottish and he has a background in football (Derek Parlane, Rangers and Scotland, for those wondering), are you into football and if so if you had the chance to be Team Captain of Rangers or win barber of the year what one would you choose?
“I’m a massive football fan, Rangers and City, yeah. Wearing a number 9 jersey for Rangers would be a dream for me. Both equal for me though, there’s so many amazing barbers out there now but I’m still young I’m only 27 so you never know what the next 5 years will bring. I feel like I’m really quite young, especially having my own shop and business, such a great industry to be in.”
What’s your favourite kind of style to work with?
“For me my favourite style varies on the client. Not everyone will suit having a skin fade, not everyone will suit having a crop. You’ve got to look at the client’s lifestyle and face shape. The slick back was a big thing last year but right now I’m enjoying the crop. Textured or blunt, it’s a big style in Manchester at the moment.”
The style of your shop, the interior is sort of industrial but minimalist, did you come up with that yourself?
“Yeah I designed it all myself, me and my friend Mark Turnpenny, he’s an electrician we spent 5 weeks kitting the shop ourselves, stripping it back to an industrial feel with the raw ceiling and the retro chairs. We’ve also added some old vintage style furniture in our reception area, we have an old school bench at our bar and then we have a 1920s old hospital bed side tables and sections for our drawers. We imported them from Slovakia, we’ve got an industrial yet vintage feel, and I’m not really a big fan of the old school retro barbershop thing so this is what inspired me.”
Like you said you’ve got a bar and a little coffee shop, why is that?
“We’re the only licensed barbershop in Manchester, we’ve got a full alcohol licensed. We’ve had companies like Jamieson’s and Guinness who supply us with large selections of lager. It was amazing PR for them and we were giving them all out to our clients and we recently had a rum company called Old J come and set up the bar and had a guy doing drinks for us at the bar. Yeah it’s a totally different vibe to any other barbershop. It’s quite a cool thing being a fully licensed barbershop. We want to be different we spend a lot of time doing the cuts, at least 45 minutes and you want to reach the kind of service they’re after really. I have a fantastic team, I have a young 19 year old who works with me and he’s going to be amazing, I have a young lad who works on a Saturday and I’m training him up once a week and I’ve got my eye on him as a rising star and a special mention to Dan Burgess who is amazing and a great right hand man.”
You’re obviously working with some up and coming talent, so where do you see barbering heading in the future?
“Every Tuesday night, every week I spend time training the boys up; I put what I learn into what I teach them. I don’t want to be that guy who doesn’t spread the knowledge and they’re soaking it up like a sponge really. For me the thing I want to apply to barbering and the thing I think is quite important is that scissor cutting is still in there. I think a lot of people are getting skin fades now and for me how long is a skin fade going to last? So for me what I’m trying to teach my lads is that the art is in the scissor cutting so I want the boys to understand that its not all about picking up a clipper. For me long hair is going to come back again and people who are just picking up clippers in college are going to be lost and confused. So for me my apprentice wont be picking up clippers until I feel that he is confident enough.”
If they made a movie about your life, who would play you?
“Leonardo DiCaprio… Nah I’m only joking! Eh I quite like the guy who was a main actor in skins… I can’t remember his name. He’s been in quite a lot. I quite like him to be honest. He’s a great British talent and I think he’s a great actor. I like him.” (Interviewers note: The actor is called Jack O’Connell, we got there in the end!)
If you won the lottery tomorrow, how would it change your life?
“It wouldn’t change my life at all I’d still keep doing what I’m doing, I’d just go on more holidays. I’ll always be barbering; I’ll never stop doing what I love.”

Cannes Film Festival 2016 Best Outfits
Thursday, May 12th, 2016
Currently the 69th annual Cannes Film Festival is taking place.
The event is being held from 11 to 22 May 2016 and like every other year before it, it will feature films from all genres and from all around the world.
The Cannes film festival was founded in 1946 and is one of the most publicised film festivals in the world, so of course this makes it a star-studded event. This year’s chosen opening film is Woody Allen’s Café Society and the red carpet for this film offered up some beautiful outfits. We’re going to show you our favourites.
Jessica Chastain stepped out in a yellow Armani gown.
The strapless dress cinches in at her waist and creates a beautiful hourglass silhouette. The silky fabric and the style of the dress give the impression of old Hollywood Glamour. Pairing the yellow dress with her red hair and rosy skin was a great decision as they work together perfectly.
Robert Cavalli was Bella Hadid’s designer of choice with her Cavalli Couture dress.
The models slender frame suits the gown ideally. It drapes over her and creates a beautiful showcase of the Swarovski crystals embedded in the gown. It has a 1920’s feel and fits in with the glamour of the Cannes Film Festival.
Victoria Beckham wore a jumpsuit from her own collection.
She is well known for sleek and chic fashion choices and designs and this was no different. The jumpsuit is simple and complimentary of her small frame. Not wearing a necklace accentuates her long neck and the strapless top and chunky diamond bangles make the outfit more feminine.
Naomi Watts looked girly and elegant in her Armani Prive dress.
The simple slinky dress is covered in embellishment to take it from what may have been a completely plain dress to an eye-catching red carpet ready number. Her chunky jewellery adds a quirky element and ties in nicely with her light pink lip.
Finally, Kirsten Dunst was the epitome of femininity in her floor length Gucci dress.
The large poppy detailing really makes her dress stand out. The red and pink look beautiful together, with the black ribbon trying in the black outlining around the flowers. Her simple up do and smoky eyes work perfectly wit the overall look.
Do you have a favourite Cannes look so far this year?
Fake Tan Tips to Make Your Summer!
Tuesday, May 10th, 2016
Summer is now quite literally around the corner and recently at the Defacto Offices in Glasgow we have been getting a bit of sun!
Great news but that means less clothing and more skin. Some of you might be suffering from a pale completion after being bundled up since autumn began and that means you might want to try your hand at fake tan.
If you’re a seasoned pro this just might be a bit of light reading but if you’re a novice then this list will guarantee you the best tan you can get yourself. So keep on reading, here are 10 handy tips to get your summer tan glowing.
Exfoliation is a key to success when tanning; it will remove the dead skin cells and create a smooth surface to begin your tan. Avoid body scrubs with oil in them however as they can create a filmy surface over your skin, something that your tan might not take to. Be sure to pay extra attention to your dry areas, like elbows and knees.
If you’re going on holiday and want a started layer of tan so you don’t walk onto the beach like a milk bottle. It’s likely you’ll also want to wax. Ensure your waxing is done 24 hours BEFORE getting your tan done, this allows the skin to calm down and heal from any injury it may have sustained. DO NOT get a wax done after your tan, it would rip of the layer of tan and totally defeat the purpose.
Don’t moisturise the day of your tanning session, some even say not to moisturise your face. Don’t use any deodorant or perfume either. These things may have oils and interfere with the tan.
If you’re doing it at home try blasting your un-tanned skin with cold water, this will close the pores and prevent them from blocking.
Use an aloe Vera solution or even a moisturiser (as long as its not oil based) to apply on dry areas that the pigment will stick to more like; hands, elbows, knees, feet and even your nails. This will prevent patchiness.
Get a good brand that specialises in tan and don’t go too dark on the first application. Incase it doesn’t work out as well as you’d hoped.
Types of tan
It’s all about personal preference. Tanning types include; spray, gel, mousse, lotions and oils. All with their own positives and negatives. Find the right one for you.
You have to use an applicator mitt to apply the product to ensure an even finish. Use sweeping motions not circular ones to get a more even distribution. Start at your ankles and work your way up your body, sweeping once over areas you’ve used aloe vera on. Trust us once on those areas is enough!
Try mixing tan with your moisturiser before applying it gently. This will soften the tan formula and create a more natural look for your face, as well as minimising breakouts.
You might want to use your tan to highlight your body shapes. Almost like body contouring. For example, buffing a little extra underneath your collarbones or between the thighs.
Give these a try and tell us if you get a more even tan! If you’d rather just book in somewhere to get a tan done, you can have a look on our listing website HERE for salons near you!
4 Mens Hairstyles for Spring/Summer 2016
Wednesday, May 4th, 2016
We’re now well into spring and on the way to summer, so why not revamp your style to suit the season?
It seems like women get the majority of the attention when it comes to summer style, particularly in the hair department, but Defacto are here to bring you some new ideas for your spring/summer barnet.
Male grooming is more important than ever and so it should be! So, take pride in your appearance and have a look at our 4 suggestions for your next hair appointment.
The days of the slicked quiff are over, now its all about texture and volume. You’ll want to have a good bit of length at the top, with the use of point cutting to create the texture and ensure you keep a bit more length at the fringe to create the actual quiff.
A no. 4 on the back and sides is recommended but if you’re looking for a more dramatic cut you will want to maybe go a little shorter.
To style it try putting hair putty or hair paste into towel dried hair. For extra volume and hold you can try your hand at salt spray, a great product for creating texture.
This is a messy style with a lot of texture and is ideal for those with short-mid length hair. This style suits most face shapes but the more defined and angular your bone structure is then the shorter you can go at the back and sides to highlight your features.
You can style it by applying a very small amount (around the size of a pea) to towel dried hair before blow-drying the remaining moisture. Try a matte paste to show off your natural texture. Use products that have a firm hold but don’t dry hard, you don’t want to loose flexibility and movement from the hair.
Longer hair on men has been a growing trend for a while now. Especially with the recent man bun trend. Long hair looks best with full facial hair or a bit of stubble and is most suited to men with masculine faces.
Keep in mind that long hair takes patience (around 8 to 12 months of no length cutting). Product wise its best to just let the hair fall in its natural state. The less product, the better. Just be sure to invest in a good quality conditioner.
A classy haircut that never really goes out of style. It’s versatile in the way that it suits both a working and a social life if you’re in a serious business setting. Hair on the side can be clippered to around an inch long, with at least four inches on the top to make sure the slicked style will stay in place.
To style it, run a comb through wet hair to set it in a natural parting. Then apply gel or pomade to set the style in place.
