How to Avoid Bed Head!

Monday, August 8th, 2016

We’ve all battled with bed head, waking up with hair like a birds nest, that you then need to spend half the morning trying to tame is never fun. So, we have gathered some tops for you to find out how you can avoid bed head.

Bed Head can be a nightmare

Although it may seem obvious, going to bed with your hair dry is recommended. Getting in late after work and going to bed with damp hair can be really tempting (we have definitely done it a couple of times!) but that will guarantee your hair standing every which way by morning. If you like to let your hair dry a bit more naturally before you blast it with the hair dryer. Wrap it up in an old cotton t-shirt, they’re less drying than towels and will allow your hair to keep more moisture and in the end, be softer.

You could also tie it up! One of the simplest solutions for long hair is a bun. Make sure you use a hair band that will not damage your hair and pull it straight up to the top. When you wake up, remove the band and brush it out. Although, it is likely you’ll still need to style it, it will leave your hair smoother since you’ve not been rolling about on it all night.

If you have a little money to burn and you want to try something a little fancier, you can try silk. Many people use silk pillowcases to battle the bed head. Silk pillowcases are said to be one of the key weapons against anti-ageing; minimising wrinkles, regulating your temperature during the night, acting as a hypoallergenic barrier and eliminating bed hair. Silk is better at keeping in moisture (cotton absorbs moisture, meaning it can dry out your face and hair) as well as minimising the effect of friction on your hair if you toss and turn in the night. Silk pillowcases don’t cause the indents in your skin that cotton pillowcases do too, so no waking up with lines all over your face!

If a pillowcase is a little too extravagant for you try a silk headscarf. Wearing a silk scarf to bed is another option to keep your hair soft and friction free overnight. You can pick them up cheaply from charity shops or on eBay. Make sure you tie it up extra tight (though obviously not uncomfortably so) to make sure it doesn’t come off in the night. Wearing a silk scarf not only protects your hair from the friction and dryness of a cotton pillow, it can also help keep a style in place such as if you’ve curled your hair.
