How to Get Shiny Hair

Monday, December 19th, 2016

We all want healthy, shiny hair but some of us just can’t seem to make it work. It could be your hair type; it could be your diet. However we think there’s a way for everyone to get shiny hair.

As it is for many things to do with skin or hair, diet will have a lot to do with the condition of your hair. If you eat a lot of unhealthy foods and drinks, it’s likely it’ll show on the surface. Shiny hair is a sign of health.

We’re not going to give you a diet plan but focus on stepping up your game with healthier meals. Protein rich foods will aid in the health of your hair and foods rich in Omega-3 will be brilliant for shine. So stock up on fish and flaxseed!

However, sometimes our hair needs a bit of a helping hand and that’s where products and styling come in…

Damaged hair.

Improving its condition is the only way to get shiny hair. When your hair is damp, apply leave-in conditioner to damaged areas. Invest in a quality deep-conditioning treatment and use it once a week. Although blow dryers and straightening irons may add to the damage, they’re the only things that will make your hair look sleeker in the mean time. Your hair needs heat to smooth the cuticle; these are the tools that can do it. Put the blow dryer on a high setting and use an iron on hair ends. Apply drops of frizz-taming serum to dry hair.

Try adding a spritz of hairspray to your brush before running it through your hair to control static and hold the style!

Straight hair.

It is the luckiest hair type of all when it comes to shine. The flat cuticle of straight hair is highly light reflective. To get shiny hair, wash and condition your hair, then blast it with a cold-water rinse for about three seconds. This helps seal in conditioner, making hair easier to style and adds a ton of shine. Blow-dry while brushing with a natural boar-bristle paddle brush. Apply a bit of light finishing serum to frizzy areas (like ends). Finish with shine-enhancing hairspray.

Try a clarifying shampoo if your hair still looks dull. You could be experiencing a build up of product and this will sort that right out!

Curly hair.

Curly hair tends to have more shine-reducing short pieces and split ends. This becomes really noticeable when it’s blown straight.
Use a moisturising shampoo and conditioner and a straightening gel. Detangle with a wide-tooth comb. As you blow-dry, wrap 2 sections around a round brush to straighten. Apply a finishing cream from 1 below the roots to the ends.
To get super-glossy curls: After conditioning hair, don’t rinse completely, leave a little in. Apply a gel to damp hair and twist sections around your fingers. Let hair dry naturally.

Dos and don’ts!

To get shiny hair, use heat-activated shampoos, conditioners and styling products. The heat of your hairdryer releases the moisturisers in these products. Also treat yourself to a weekly deep-conditioning treatment or hair mask. This will do your hair the world of good. If your hair is curly, use your fingers to separate your curls once your hair is dry. A brush will cause your hair to frizz. If your hair is coloured, try a shine-enhancing hair-colour product.

get shiny hair

You should avoid applying finishing products too close to your scalp, your hair will look greasy. Don’t weigh down fine hair with a heavy serum formulated only for very thick hair. Avoid heavy product before heat styling. You might end up cooking you hair! Don’t use a plastic vent brush to detangle wet hair. It stretches and eventually snaps the hair. Use it to brush as you blow-dry, to give your hair a sleeker look.

Hopefully, with these tips you’re well on your way to get shiny hair you’ve been dreaming of. If you have any tips you’d like to share, we’d love to hear them! Let us know by leaving a comment.

How to Wake Up on Cold Winter Mornings

Friday, October 7th, 2016

Waking up in the morning during those cold winter months can be torture. However, we think it can be made easier…

how to wake up on cold winter mornings

We know it’s gotten a lot colder in the UK in the past couple of weeks. It’s gotten a lot darker in the mornings too. This can make the whole getting out of bed experience pretty difficult. The dark rooms and the cold climate can fool you into feeling like it’s still time to be asleep. Sadly it’s not the case. So, how can we all wake up easier on winter mornings?

Cold glass of water.

As soon as you wake up, have a drink. Cold water will help make you feel more awake and will stimulate your body. It’s also a great way to kickstart your metabolism for the day! If you’re more of a coffee person, you can do that too. A programmable coffee machine might be a good investment for you. This means you can set a time for your coffee to start brewing. Ensuring you really do wake up and smell the coffee.

No reasoning.

how to wake up on cold winter mornings

One of the worst things you can do is reason with yourself. Don’t allow yourself to argue why you deserve another half an hour, or how you can skip this or that to have more time in bed. You will end up feeling worse for skipping a part of your morning routine rather than feeling better for having a little bit longer in bed. Get up and make yourself busy and you’ll be awake before you know it.

Give yourself a reason to get up.

We all have our motivations. For some, we like to spend a little more time of our appearance, or we like to have a great breakfast. Find a reason to get you up and out of bed. Try a new hairstyle that day or have a warm breakfast instead of cereal or toast. Find something that you’ll look forward to when you wake up. That way it’ll feel like less of a chore to wake up and get out of bed.

Don’t fall back asleep.

how to wake up on cold winter mornings

We know the feeling, you wake up, check your clock and you’ve got 10 minutes left. you’re annoyed that you’ve woken up just 10 minutes before your alarm but you go back to sleep anyway. Don’t! The fact that you have woken up just before your alarm means you’re in a routine and your body clock is telling you that you’ve had enough sleep. Get up and spend that 10 minutes doing something. If you go back to sleep you’re more likely to feel more drowsy when you wake up again.

A morning shower.

A morning shower does absolute wonders for people. It’s a sure way to wake you up and make you feel better about the day ahead. The water and change in temperature will promote circulation in the body, therefore, battling the cold climate. A rousing mint or tea tree body wash might help with that as well!

Think about what you have to do that day.

Hopefully this tip doesn’t cause premature stress for the day ahead. But, focusing on what you need to do that day will get you into the right mindset. Less focus on how much you want to be in bed and more focus on what you want to get done that day. That way you will accomplish more during the day and be raring to go.

how to wake up on cold winter mornings

Exercise each morning.

We all do want to keep fit but we don’t always have the drive to. Scheduling time to exercise in the morning should help with that. If you choose to wake up early and exercise your body will become accustomed to it. Exercise will also stimulate your mind and we guarantee your working day will benefit from some morning exercise. Also, just think, if its over with in the morning you don’t have to do it when you get home!

We suppose if all of this fails you can just leave your phone at the other end of the room so you have to get up and out of bed for your alarm in the morning… Do you have any tips on how to wake up in the morning? If you do, let us know!

What Causes Dark Circles Under Your Eyes?

Thursday, September 15th, 2016

We all know the feeling. You’ve had a bad nights sleep and you wake up with looking like a panda. But what causes dark circles?

what causes dark circles?

You may be surprised to know that it actually has very little to do with how much sleep you’ve had. A lie in may diminish the harshness of them but you’ll need to consider their source if you want rid of them for good. So lets find out what causes dark circles!

Genetics are the biggest culprit. If you inherit fair or thin skin under the eyes, it’s more obvious when blood pools there (often because of slower circulation from lack of sleep). This accumulation causes fragile capillaries to stretch and leak.

If you’re getting older and you’re suddenly asking what causes dark circles. It may be because you’ve never had them before now. Age is another factor. Over time, skin loses collagen and thins, so veins show through more prominently. Sunbathing speeds up this process by breaking down collagen and mottling skin colour.

Seasonal allergies

what causes dark circles?

Allergies can cause dark circles

They trigger the release of histamines in the body, which in turn inflame blood vessels and cause swelling. To determine why your circles happen, gently stretch the skin under your eyes. If that area becomes darker, the circles are probably due to genetics or aging. If the color doesn’t change, UV rays or allergies are probably the cause.

How can I treat them?

If your circles are the result of vascular issues, double up on pillows at night to stop blood from building up under your eyes. In the morning, apply a cold compress for about five minutes to constrict the blood vessels. Try an eye cream with caffeine, which helps constrict vessels. Other smart alternatives: Arnica-based creams. These can be found easily in supermarkets and health stores. Which are considered to have anti-inflammatory properties, may reduce the appearance of darkness. And eye creams with green tea or grapeseed oil help strengthen capillary walls. Also tweaking your diet to include fatty omega-3 will benefit this greatly.

what causes dark circles?

For allergy-induced circles, consider taking an over-the-counter antihistamine before allergies begin to abate shadows. And, last, if thin skin is the issue, use a collagen-building cream. Vitamin C also encourages production and can help brighten skin tone. You could also try wearing sunscreen daily. The UV rays could cancel out your hard work.

If you wake up and need to cancel out those dark circles quickly, use concealer. One that matches your skin tone or is a little lighter will do wonders. Applying it over your layer of foundation and blending it in will banish them right away.

Acne Myths You Shouldn’t Believe

Thursday, August 25th, 2016

Acne affects a lot of people in their lifetime and it can be a confidence killer, but there are a lot of acne myths that you should take with a grain of salt.

Although acne doesn’t differentiate its victims, it’s important to keep in mind that all skin types are different and that there are many different kinds of acne that are dealt with in different ways. Lets delve into those acne myths!

Lets debunk some acne myths

Lets debunk some acne myths

Avoiding Oils

One of the most common acne myths is that using oils is bad for those with acne prone skin, this isn’t always the case. Argan oil and jojoba, which are similar to our skin’s sebum, trick the skin into not overproducing oil, thus warding off breakouts. Hemp seed oil eliminates blackheads and is anti-inflammatory. Many people with oily complexions also suffer from acne and scarring. Rose hip seed and baobob oil help to heal repair tissue and brighten skin due to high levels vitamin C, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, and retinoic acid.

Prescription Only
Acne Myths: only medication works

Acne Myths: only medication works

Many believe that the only solution to your acne is a visit to the GP or a dermatologist. This is an acne myth. While it is often a good idea to see a dermatologist, there are some excellent topical products that can treat and control acne along with scarring and pigmentation. The combo of glycolic and salicylic acids help to exfoliate the skin, decrease sebum production, and actually show antibacterial properties when treating the organism that causes acne.

Sweating is an Issue

Sweat glands are not the same as oil pores. While sweat alone cannot cause acne, there is a condition called acne mechanica, a form of acne caused by a combination of heat, friction, and covered skin. It’s often found on athletes who sweat under their helmets. Other culprits of acne mechanica include tight clothing, snug backpack straps, and headbands worn for long periods of time.

Don’t Exfoliate Daily
Acne Myths: don't exfoliate daily

Acne Myths: don’t exfoliate daily

This is a thing of the past, because past exfoliation products were too abrasive for daily use and caused increased dryness, redness, and a generally compromised skin barrier. However, new products on the market use gentler exfoliants and can be used routinely without any issues. It’s important to cleanse your face twice daily. Anytime you wash your face, there’s a component or degree of exfoliation. For the products in your skincare routine to work best, you need to have debris-free skin.

Sunshine Dries Acne Out

Though in some cases the sun can benefit your acne, it’s not the be all and end all. Sun exposure can cause inflammation of the skin and dry the surface, causing sebaceous glands to increase secretion to compensate. This will result in oily rebound, clogged pores, and acne pustules.

It’s a Puberty Problem
Acne Myths: only a teenage problem

Acne Myths: only a teenage problem

Adults of any age can suffer from acne! Adult acne usually begins in your late 20s to early 30s. Stress is a catalyst that can play a role in aggravating the condition. Genetics plays a large part as well. Hormonal changes as a result of pregnancy can affect adult acne, worsening or improving the condition. Another hormonal change that can affect adult acne is discontinuing the use of birth control pills as well as premenstrual hormonal fluctuation. Tap water can play into the rise of adult acne, depending on a city’s calcium and magnesium levels. And in today’s society, adults look at their skin more critically. They feel there is a lower threshold of what acceptable, which drives them to seek treatment.

It’s All the Same

People must treat adult acne differently to adolescent acne. Mature skin tends to be drier, so you need to be mindful that you aren’t blasting skin with harsh products that will further dehydrate it. You don’t need to wash with an antibacterial soap, as it can severely dry skin and lead to itching and redness. Instead, use a gentle cleanser. Most of the prescription medications are very irritating and drying. It isn’t tolerated in adult skin as it is more oily. We recommend retinoids and chemical peels as they effectively address acne and ageing at the same time.

Sun Cream Will Cause You Problems
Acne Myths: sun cream will cause you problems

Acne Myths: sun cream will cause you problems

Look for a physical sunscreen that contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. These ingredients sit on top of the skin to protect instead of being absorbed. Also look for oil-free, noncomedogenic sunscreens that come in a dry-mist application. Stay clear of ingredients like para-amino benzoic acid, which can cause clogged pores and allergic reactions.

Acne is a common problem and although acne myths and cures are rife, you may not get rid of it. However, you may be able to control it with this knowledge.

Ridiculous Things You Can Buy if You Won Euro Millions Tonight!

Friday, July 22nd, 2016

You may well know its Euro Millions today and the jackpot is an astounding £45 Million.

Most people cant even imagine what they would do with that kind of money, but what they do know is that they would leave their jobs and go live it up with their millions.

In fact 82% of the people included in our latest Twitter poll said that they would leave their jobs immediately if they won the Euro Millions. We don’t know what the other 18% were thinking…

Lets have a look at the ridiculous things you could easily buy with the £45 Million!

For all the people who lust after perfect teeth out there, you can buy these gold and diamond dentures for a cool £89,000. Dubai Liberty Dental Clinic sells the dentures made from 10g of pure 25 carat gold and 156 diamonds weighing a total of 2.5 carats and they’re surprisingly popular.

You could sail away on this Burgess yacht. The Silver Fast is the fourth and most advance yacht in their Silver Yachts series. The website says onboard it has the ‘owner’s suite with lounge and large private deck; three double VIP guest cabins, one double guest cabin and three further twin cabins. The sun deck features an outdoor cinema and a glass-fronted 8 person Jacuzzi, and her expansive beach club is complete with entertainment equipment, full spa area including sauna, steam room, gym, massage room and beauty salon.’

It goes on to say ‘Her aft deck features a stunning ‘winter garden’ with wraparound sliding glass panels and air conditioning, providing the owner with an indoor or outdoor dining option for up to 20 guests. The innovative tender stowage is accessed via unique forward gull wing doors housing 7.6m customised tenders for all weathers. Her forward “touch and go” helipad is suitable for helicopters up to an Augusta 109 or an EC135.’ We don’t know what some of that means either. Its asking price is €79,500,000 so in our currency it’s £66,784,871.69.

Sink your teeth into the world’s most expensive donut hybrid. It’s actually just a really fancy cronut called the Luxury Zebra Cro and it costs £1500. The ingredients are Iranian saffron infused butter croissant dough, Cristal Rose Champagne Caviar, gold leaf decoration, French delicacy Normandy butter, powdered Nutella and the world’s most expensive Amedei Porcelana Chocolate. Very nice.

This property in Hampstead, London will set you back £22.5 million and it has; 3 reception rooms, 4 bathrooms, a gym, a cinema, its own gardens, 6 bedrooms, a swimming pool, a lift and a double garage. Its also 100m from Hampstead Heath and you can view the property HERE.

If you’re feeling thirsty you can put in an order for this tequila. The Tequila Ley .925 is tequila that claims to have a unique production process; it’s in a bottle that contains 6,400 diamonds, which apparently add to the taste of the tequila… somehow. We don’t know if anyone actually knows how it tastes considering its £2,671,246.13 (or $ 3,500,000) to buy.

Although, if you’re married and if things go sour you can look at this list of the world’s most expensive divorces.

Get involved in the Euro Millions HERE and have fun day dreaming!

Baby Powder Takes Beauty World By Storm

Wednesday, June 8th, 2016

Baby powder is fine and light and easy to use

Baby powder is fine and light and easy to use

Baby powder is no luxury product, but beauty bloggers might be making it one.

The uses for baby powder have been shooting through the roof in recent weeks as bloggers herald it the latest must have in beauty.

The main reason might surprise you but the extensive uses of it might surprise you even further.

Everyone knows that you can use baby powder in your hair as a cheaper equivalent to dry shampoo, it soaks up the excess grease and makes your roots more matte, to let you pretend your hair can last to that third day.

Moda Mob uses baby powder to bake in this video

Moda Mob uses it to bake in this video

Now beauty bloggers on Instagram and YouTube are using the powder as a setting powder. Baking your make up is a fairly recent trend, you apply the setting powder to the areas you have concealed (like your under eyes, nose and chin) and sometimes places you might highlight (forehead, cheekbones) to help your make up sit for longer.

While face and setting powders can set you back around £20 for high-end brands like Charlotte Tilbury and Mac, a 200g tub of Johnsons Baby Powder will cost you a whopping £1.05 from Boots.

Like expensive setting powders, baby powder is used to reduce oil and shine and keep make up in place. Beauty Bloggers are swearing by it, Instagrammer Shabnam H. Khawja posted this caption with one of her videos.

“I’m in love with baby powder YES I used baby powder to bake my face and I mean wow!!! It really does work (previous photo was taken with flash NO flash back)”

London based Chanel Boateng posted this video demonstrating how to use it and what it can do for you!

Though this is an exciting breakthrough for those who like to find beauty dupes, baby powder is certainly multi use. It can also be used for

• Getting longer lashes – applying a coat of mascara and then dusting your eyelashes with a cotton swap   before applying another coat can have a huge impact.
• Stopping chafing – whether you’re a runner or someone who just suffers in the heat, applying it to areas where you chafe can stop it.
• Helping your lipstick last longer – you can lightly apply some to your lips after you have applied your lipstick to set it in place for longer.
• Keeping shoes smelling fresh – summer means sweaty feet, so applying it to your feet or the inside of your shoes should prevent any odor.

Although there has been news recently of talcum powders (like Johnsons Baby Powder) being the cause of the growth of ovarian cancer cells, it has been highlighted that this is caused by the particles of powder entering the body through the vagina.

So, in conclusion, if you’re going to invest in some baby powder to try these beauty hacks… make sure you don’t use it down below ladies!

Barclay Wolf Tape In Hair Extensions

Barclay Wolf's branding and extensions

Barclay Wolf’s branding and extensions

Barclay Wolf triumphed on Sunday night at The Herald’s Look Awards 2016.

The relatively new business lifted the award for Innovation in Technology, previously held by us, for their revolutionary tape in hair extensions.

The creators of Barclay Wolf have over 40 years experience in the hair and beauty industry and to quote their website they “understand the needs of salon owners, stylists and extension technicians, as well as the demands of their discerning clientele”. It’s understandable how they would be able to create a product that would win such an important award.

As well as the tape in extensions they also have double and triple drawn pre-bonded extensions, in both 18” and 22”, they have a variety of colours and even have the option of ombre shades in all of their extensions. For their new tape in range they have both the regular tape in and the invisible tape in.

Regular Tape in extension

Regular Tape in extension

The regular tape in also comes in 18” and 22”, as well as 32 colours, including ombre and works by ‘sandwiching’ the strips of hair between two extensions topped with a layer of adhesive. (A video of Chris Christoforou demonstrating the application at the Scottish Hair and Beauty Show 2016 will be at the bottom of the article). Their invisible extensions work in the same manner, but there is a layer of hair on the top extension to disguise the tape. Barclay Wolf says this is best suited for those with thin hair or those looking for a perfected look. There are a limited number of colours in this range at the moment but they will be adding more in 2016!

Invisible tape in extension

Invisible tape in extension

We are sure that many people will be excited by this range of extensions particularly professionals in the industry. If you are keen to train up in this you can attend training course in Glasgow, London and Liverpool (contact Barclay Wolf about this HERE).

The aim for these extensions is to cut the time of application by over half and to remove the element of damage that other extensions bring to your natural hair. However, of course they have upkeep requirements, with the main point being to avoid applying oils to your hair. You can read the upkeep requirements HERE

We hope we have encouraged you to get involved with Barclay Wolf’s latest venture and we wish them all the best. Congratulations to the new Innovators in Technology!
