Best Bars in Manchester
Monday, September 26th, 2016
Manchester has swiftly become a weekend destination for those looking for a good night out. So where are the best bars in Manchester?
Whether you’re having a weekend away with your friends or you’ve just moved there, there are some places you should know about. Manchester boasts a vibrant and versatile night-life, with bars and eateries for every occasion. However, we want to offer your some suggestions as to the best bars in Manchester that you should give a go!
Gorilla occupies the space in the railway arches of Whitworth Street that was formally Manchester’s most experimental performance venue, the Green Room. Spread over two floors (gin parlour upstairs, standard bar down), Gorilla works as a place to drink or a place to eat. Offering a simple but delicious menu that includes burgers, salads and full English breakfasts. Veggies take note – the meat-free Sunday roast is the best in town. But that’s not all. Once the bar was established, the performance space re-opened, making Gorilla a great, mid-sized venue for gigs, book readings, club nights and everything in between. The line-up suggests a desire to mix established artists with those still emerging or trying to break through, so it’s good to see that some of the old Green Room ethic still remains. Definitely one of the best bars in Manchester.
This sits halfway up Beetham Tower (Manchester’s tallest building). It separates the lower Hilton hotel with posh apartments above and consists of two floors. Cloud 23 is a bar offering the best views of any in the city. The bar itself is impressive the moment the lift doors open and you’re welcomed with a smile, shown to your sofa or table and offered a cocktail menu as dizzying as the heights that you’re occupying. From traditional favourites to complex creations with dry ice wafting out of them, the drinks do not disappoint. There’s a fine selection of wines and beers too. Though it is in high demand so you may need to book well in advance
Black Dog Ballroom
When it’s closing time for all the other bars, there’s only one place to go. That place is Black Dog Ballroom. Open until 4am on school nights and even later on the weekend, this is the place for that ‘one more drink’ you definitely don’t need but crave so desperately. The American prohibition theme of the bar sneaks into the food, too, with New York-style diner food. Mostly it consists of burgers, homemade pizzas and gigantic onion rings. The speakeasy vibe doesn’t make for the most welcoming eating and drinking environment during the daylight hours, but for an afternoon playing pool, there’s nowhere better.
For people who like the taste of the Caribbean, Hula’s Tiki Lounge will be right up your street. A slice of the tropics is on offer here, where you can indulge in a remarkable array of rum infused cocktails amongst other delights. Soak up the atmosphere in an exotic inspired interior whilst being the envy of friends and colleagues alike. Located in the Northern Quarter, this bar is comfortably affordable and great for a night out.
This Bohemian bar, set over two floors on Thomas Street, represents the Northern Quarter better than most bars – an unpretentious place to relax with regular live folk music hosted by The Travelling Band, a fantastic jukebox, and DJs from Piccadilly Records, amongst others, spinning everything from funk, soul and blues to psych, Kraut and garage. Throw into the mix a great pub quiz and an amazing selection of ales and spirits, and you can see why this is one of the best bars in Manchester.
We hope you find the bar that’s right for you when you’re visiting Manchester. Have we missed out any of the best bars in Manchester out? Any that you think should be on this list? If so, let us know!
